"The world is my family," says the Maha Upanishad, a Vedic scripture of Hinduism with an oral tradition dating back more than 6,000 years. From that beginning, every religion has proclaimed that all people and all nations are one great family-and that the true basis for human life is understanding, compassion, forgiveness, charity, and assistance in every way toward others.
This concept stands as the foundation upon which all religious thought is based. Since we are all children of God, this principle states, we should think of each other as we would the beloved members of our own family.
When we focus on the "otherness" of people, rather than on the "Oneness" that they have with ourselves, we open up the possibility of suspicion, fear, and hostility. Then, at the slightest provocation-real or imagined-we strike out, feeling that there is great logic in our actions. It is tempting in today’s stressful atmosphere to be pulled from the depths of truth and focus only on superficial diversity. Instead, we should maintain our understanding that we are all one great family, related not only by blood by an unbreakable spiritual bond.
