Council approves SRP landscaping for Asean summit

CEBU City Hall will spend almost P700,000 for landscaping in the South Reclamation Project (SRP), particularly the portion of the old Kawit Island.

The project, according to a resolution approved by the City Council, is among the beautification efforts of the City in its thrust to attract tourists and investors.

The Kawit Park Development Project is one of the many preparations for the Asean summit in December, which will be held for the first time outside Manila.

The summit is expected to gather the heads of state from the 10 member-countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and leaders from Japan, South Korea, China, Australia and the US, among others.

The Cebu City Government is on a beautification blitz.

The council approved last Wednesday the detailed estimate of the project, which is pegged at P695,093. The Parks and Playground Commission will handle the beautification program.

What's interesting is the only time that the city tidies up is when a big event happens. After that, we all go back to our normal lives and leave the roads, trash and unruly drivers alone.

Dec. 11-14 is the tentative sked..Arroyo declared this date as public holidays.

Southeast Asian Summit to be Held in Central Philippines: Arroyo

MANILA, Philippines, Jan 12, 2006 (AFP) - The annual ASEAN leaders' summit is to be held in the central Philippines in December, President Gloria Arroyo announced Thursday. The Philippines was supposed to take helm of the alphabetically rotating ASEAN chairmanship next year, but Myanmar said it would forego its chance to host the summit later this year amid pressure over the continued detention of democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. The Philippines will take over the ASEAN chairmanship from Malaysia. The summit will gather leaders from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam and will tackle various issues affecting the region from terrorism to avian flu, officials said. "The ASEAN summit will be held in the cities of Cebu, Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu," Arroyo said in a speech during a visit to Cebu, a major tourist destination.
