Cruz, Menor PBA Draft Early Birds
    By Cedelf P. Tupas

MANILA, Philippines - Two former collegiate stars have made themselves available for the PBA Rookie Draft on Aug. 2.

Jervy Cruz, the 2007 UAAP Most Valuable Player from the University of Santo Tomas, and former San Beda star Ogie Menor are among the first batch of applicants to the draft, along with Filipino-American Lance Convento.

The information was relayed to the Inquirer by the three players’ agent, Charlie Dy.

The 6-foot-4 Cruz, who can play center or power forward, boosted his stock when he spearheaded UST’s improbable run to the 2006 UAAP crown.

Inside scoring and rebounding have been the strong points of Cruz’s game. He averaged close to 20 points and 14 rebounds with the Tigers last season.

The 6-2 Menor was an integral part of the Red Lions’ three straight titles, winning the Finals MVP award in 2006.

He quit the Lions in March, citing pressure from school officials for him to join the RP Developmental Team that would have ruled him out of the draft.

Former La Salle forward Rico Maierhofer, ex-University of the East guard Marcy Arellano, former UST swingman Francis Allera and Fil-Ams Josh Vanlandingham and Kevyn White are expected to submit their applications in the next few weeks, said Dy, who also handles the career of the five players.

The league has set a June 22 deadline for players with foreign lineage to submit their applications, while homegrown players have until July 24, said PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios.

kung mag hisgut ta og home court every team, ma usab ang whole format sa PBA and kinsa man nga team ang mo represent sa isa ka lugar? unya ma proud kaha ta taga cebu if ang atong mga player deri kay puros taga manila? mo daku ang gasto sa management sa team tungod sa byahe2x..ang result mo gamay ang sweldo sa mga player and ang pinaka worst ang katong deli effective nga player dali ra ka ayo ma ilisan.... di pa gani ka pakita og labok...sayang man ang sweldo... hino-on daghan sad mataga-an og chance nga player kay daghan naman sad mag cge og scout para ilang e puli...

@monrose, good point bai...lisod kaayo mag homecourt ngari sa RP, island country baya ta...PBA dili NBA na daku budget.... tan-awa kuno, if ang game i-held sa Cebu, sakay nasad eroplano resulta, jet lag, walay ayo duwa ana kay di makalingaw,di mangigo players kay lipong pa... niya 10 teams ra PBA kay wa man jud mi expand... no other pro leagues around the world nga mulapas ug 20 teams and conference except euroleague and NBA...
remember, it was stated that wala jud mi expand ang PBA tungod sa budget restrictions and unavailability sa mga companies na ganahan muapil sa liga... mahal raba registration fee sa PBA... pero ambot kaha karun...daghan man balita na Harbour kay mag PBA nasad and a certain company na member na sauna sa PBA kay mubalik sad...so 12 teams nah...

Purefoods try to nab semis spot
    june 14,2009

    By Frank C. Calapre

MANILA—After an 11-day break, exciting action resumes as Purefoods faces Rain or Shine, while Sta. Lucia Realty faces Burger King in a do-or-die match of the best-of-three quarterfinal round of the 2009 PBA-Motolite Fiesta Conference at the Araneta Coliseum.

Both series are tied at 1-1. The winner between the Giants and the Elasto Painters in their 6:30 p.m. encounter will earn the right to face Barangay Ginebra in the best-of-seven semifinal round.

Sta. Lucia coach Boyet Fernandez, on the other hand, hopes star guard Ryan Reyes can see action for the Realtors when they collide against the Whoppers to dispute the other semis slot at 4 p.m.

The winner between the Realtors and the Whoppers faces a gargantuan task against elimination round leader San Miguel Beer in the other semis battle.

Coach Ryan Gregorio expressed confidence the Giants can hurdle the job and make it to the semis, their first since the 2007 Philippine Cup when they topped the eliminations and earned an outright spot to the finals.
