Priest burns himself to death over Islam
    From David Crossland in Berlin

A retired priest committed suicide by setting himself on fire in a German monastery in protest at the spread of Islam and the Protestant Church’s inability to contain it.

Roland Weisselberg, 73, poured a can of petrol over his head and set light to himself in the grounds of the Augustine monastery in the eastern city of Erfurt, where Martin Luther spent six years as a monk at the beginning of the 16th century.

Witnesses said that Weisselberg climbed into a building site next to the monastery church, where a Reformation Day service was being held. He shouted “Jesus and Oskar” before the flames engulfed him. The latter name was an apparent reference to Oskar Brüsewitz, a priest who burnt himself in 1976 in protest against the Communist regime in East Germany. Monastery staff tried to put out the flames and Weisselberg was still conscious as a nun prayed with him before he was taken to hospital. He died a day later, on Wednesday.

Media reports said that he had tried to kill himself inside the church but changed his mind when he found the side door was locked.

The Provost of Erfurt, Elfriede Begrich, told reporters that Weisselberg’s widow had said that he killed himself because he was alarmed at the spread of Islam and the Church’s stance on the issue.

She described Weisselberg as an erudite man who had addressed repeatedly the Church’s position on Islam in meetings over the past three to four years. He had written to her, urging her to take the matter more seriously, she said.

The Protestant Bishop of Saxony, Axel Noack, said the suicide had shocked the community and that he hoped it would not hurt relations between Christians and Muslims.

“We in the East are still among ourselves when we discuss Islam,” said Bishop Noack, adding that there were not many Muslims in the area.

Relations with Muslims have been a matter of intense debate in Germany in recent months, stoked by the cancellation of a Mozart opera in Berlin amid fears that it could provoke Muslim violence, and a speech by the Pope in September in which he quoted from a medieval text linking the spread of the Islamic faith to violence.

The Berlin Deutsche Oper has said that it will stage the opera, which has a scene showing the severed heads of the Prophet Muhammad, Jesus and Buddha.

I pity the priest who was unable to understand and accept ISLAM! That I think was a case of fanaticism! Sorry for my observation!

Well just curious...and evaluating, if your opinion about the Shari'a law being irrelevant in the 21st century has some good basis.

    Yes I guess I'm a Muslim.

Asalam alaykum! I have a Palestinian friend from whom i get my understanding about Islam and sparked my curiousity to read qur'an. He used to work in Ramallah in constant struggle against frequent Israeli raid, conflict between Fatah and Hamas and various skirmishes. We talked a lot about politics and religion, though at times we have conflicting views about some issues, at the end we find both our beliefs agreeable...
Islam does not tolerate terrorism, as mostly misunderstood. Islam even considered Jesus a prophet, a messenger of God, and considered to have been a Muslim. It is unfair how society link terrorism in general to Islam but accepted the advocacy of medieval popes to inquisition and crusades without reservations...Perhaps Monk Ambrozije Novak of independent state of Croatia and Slobodan Milosevic of Serbia were greater terrorists then yet it was never branded to Christianity in general..
There are people who utilizes religion, twisting its principles to exploit vulnerable minds for their own gains--but it is not exclusive to Islam..
The only uncertainty i have on Islam, which i hope i would be enlightened by Mr. Malic, would be on the issue of equality among women...
    i have read:
Qur'an[49:13] O people, we created you from the same male and female, and rendered you distinct peoples and tribes, that you may recognize one another. The best among you in the sight of GOD is the most righteous. GOD is Omniscient, Cognizant.

but in reality i find it hard to reconcile how the verse applies in Islam countries, especially in Saudi Arabia - the capital of Islam, where women are deprived of many rights like suffrage, in dress code, legal system, education and few others..

i would be glad to learn some understanding on this context...

Hi...Thank you for dropping by in this thread and i appreciate how you present your idea.

I think the best way for you to have a better understanding of the condition of women in Islam, and I believe that it is the only way, is for you to let your hands get dirty, so to speak, others would say burn some candles.

I would recommend you to visit this site...Welcome to the Website of Muslim Women's League It contains a lot of beneficial information that would surely level your understanding about Muslimah(Muslim women).

to give you a little perspective here are some points that i would like to share to you.

    - The Qur'an treats the female gender equally as clearly shown in the verse you quoted above.
to say 'must be treated equally' it means they should have access to education, position and other areas where they can excel and exercise their rights as a human being.
    - The Qur'an also recommends that we must protect the dignity and the rights of women.
    - The dress code serves the very purpose of upholding the dignity of women.
say, two women walked among men, one wears a skimpy attire and the other is wearing the traditional dress for muslimah, w/c of the two would you think has the highest percentage of getting a disrespectful gesture from these men?

but of course the dress code varies from different Islamic countries for example in U.A.E women there are more liberated than their KSA counterpart.

    - Women in Islam have the right to earn their OWN money. The husband should provide the needs of the family. If the women desires to work or engaged in a business she can do so and the money that she earned is her own. naa ra niya kung hatagn ba niya iyang husband or dili.

But I have to admit that there are Islamic countries who are not following or should I say gives a different interpretation in relation to the Quranic verses on how women should be treated. Human as they are, subject to imperfections.

Gender inequity does exist and it is not only found in Islamic countries but also in other countries even in USA.

I think that its about time to give this religion a second look. Misconceptions and fundamentalism has brought this wonderful religion in the pit of shadows. Where scary figures and actuations popped ones mind upon hearing its name.

Islam is a beautiful religion and i think that it deserves a second look.
