What's wrong with my wireless network connection? the speed is very erratic even if im right beside the router?
can someone help me with my network connection?

i have a router at home - a buffalo airstation nfiniti. everything works fine. 2 nintendo ds-es, 2 psps, the wii, 2 pcs that have a usb wifi adapter, and a laptop. they connect at a good and stable 54mbps. all of them are working fine, except for my laptop.

    i have a compaq cq40 310au. it runs windows 7 RC.
now my problem is, even if i'm right beside the router, the speed of my connection tends to drop to 1mbps. sometimes it goes up to 5.5mbps but that's not normal considering i'm right beside the router. the other devices that are farther away can easily get a stable 54mbps, while my laptop's wifi speed is erratic. I tried borrowing one of the usb wifi dongles from the desktop and i plugged it in my laptop. it easily connected and has a stable speed of 54mbps. i tried connecting both network adapters and put their status windows side-by-side and i could see that the built in network adapter is really a lot slower while the usb one is stable at 54mbps.
When i'm just newly connected to the network, the speed is 54mbps, and it will slowly start decreasing until its either 1mbps or 2mbps.

the built in one is a broadcom adapter by the way.

so, the problem doesnt seem to be the router because all other devices connect fine.
the problem also doesnt seem to be my computer or the operating system since the usb dongle connected very well.

can someone help me? i'm a techie guy and i can live without anyone fixing my computers but this seems to be a problem i just cant solve!

    thanks for reading.

You already isolated the problem, kung imo gamiton ang built-in nga adapter intermittent ang wireless connection but kung mo gamit ka ug lain nga adapter seems to be stable. So update the driver of your built-in wireless adapter.

did it happen after you installed Windows 7RC?
What was the original OS installed? XP? Vista?
    Probably a driver issue.

yes the driver is the latest na. i did not notice whether the problem is present before sa vista.

update!: i noticed that my connection goes back to 54mbps when i shut down the CPU that's about 2 feet away from the router. Then when i turn it back on, the connection starts getting slower. I'm 95% sure of this!
now my question is: why does it only affect my laptop? the other laptops and desktops still get a stable 54mbps connection...

i respectfully disagree... given good pc specs, it actually fairs well. i dont know how well it will run on less powerful pcs like netbooks though. but on the same pc, windows xp will always run faster, but xp is getting dated for me. and windows 7 beats windows xp in gaming benchmarks. but i have to say, the driver system is crap. hehe. i was glad it installed all my drivers for me, and it even updated it on windows updated. but it got my touchpad wrong. it installed synaptics drivers for an alps touchpad. and i got even later drivers on the hp website.

i'm not regretting installing windows 7. well thats just my opinion. i used to like xp a lot and i never wanted to replace it. but thats what i also said during the time of windows 98.

    peace...

have you actually "metered" the connections if they are really 54 mbps like transfer a file from your laptop to the pc via wifi or transfer a file from pc to pc?

your laptop may be showing the real connection while the others are showing theoretical connections.

your router also affects wifi connections and performance. if your buffalo is a whr54g or whr125g, you may want to upgrade to tomato hacked firmware which has been the best for me so far.

it sounds like your laptop may have a bad nic.
    try change channel(ch9), rts/frag threshold 2304, beacon interval 50
try setting it to a b signal... a lot more stable and a li'l farther.
