MAXIMO OLIVEROS FAILS TO CHARM SUNDANCE
by Isah V. Red
From the Manila Standard
2/6/2006
Quinceañera of Wash Westmoreland and Richard Glatzer about disaffected teeners coming of age in a gentrifying community in Echo Park district of Los Angeles won the Grand Jury Prize in the dramatic competition.
No, The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros, as Aureus Solito’s film was known at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, wasn’t in the same league as Quinceañera, which also won the World Cinema Audience Award. The movie shot in digital video was in the same group as the French film 13 Tzameti by Gela Babliani about a guy who finds himself at the brink of human decency, a place whose only inhabitants are the underbelly of society, when he by mistake follows instructions intended for someone else.
13 Tzameti easily won the hearts and minds of the jury and chose it to win the World Cinema Jury Prize in the dramatic competition. The World Cinema Audience Award went to Toa Fraser’s No. 2 from New Zealand about Nanna Maria and her family who have forgotten how to party. That’s about to change with Nanna’s resolve to bring the family come to life with the passion and heat of the South Pacific.
Rabid admirers of Solito’s movie about a pre-pubescent gay who falls in love with a hunky policeman might think I am just being nasty in writing this note. No, I’m not. I’m stating a fact.
The movie, which got glowing reviews from local movie reviewers who know little of film history—they can’t even distinguish film from video—also got less than enthusiastic reviews.
Dennis Harvey, writing for Variety, the film business trade magazine, found Solito’s first narrative feature worthy to be screened in other festivals, gay fests particularly. But, he added that “it will nonetheless prove a difficult sell offshore, where the 12-year-old protag’s cross-dressing precocity and his relationship with a hunky policeman may cause more discomfort than amusement.”
Solito and his disciples should not worry, though, as the movie, no matter how menial it appeared to the crowd at Sundance, had already been declared by the self-proclaimed gurus of local cinema as the best picture of 2005. I can almost see the eyebrows of critic Gino Dormiendo and screenwriter at large Iskho F. Lopez rising to the top of Mt. Everest in protest.
What we do in life echoes throughout eternity~ Please support your lokal artists and their efforts to promote the Cebuano identity and culture!
wa ko kakita ani when it hit the theaters...so sayang!
