^ Well, if it is a place, right?
But isn't Hell a state wherein the soul is ultimately separated from God?

^ Maybe bro... I'm not a theologian or anything. But the way I see it, change can only exist in a temporal world like the one we have. So if there's an afterlife, the soul could be "stuck" in a changeless state. If that soul had lived his life well, then the state of his soul would permanently be a good one, therefore he would be able to commune with God.
According to Pope John Paul II and some theologians there is NO HELL as a permanent state! Everyone will go back to GOD for GOD created man in his image and likeness and therefore all his creatures will finally realize and love GOD in the end! NO ONE CAN ESCAPE THE INFINITE LOVE OF GOD!!!
In a temporal world, there are countless opportunities for change. We can change ourselves by thinking in a particular way and acquiring certain habits. The more we choose to do good by living virtuous lives, the more we become persons of a particularly good kind, the more we develop a good character. Character is not cultivated in an instant. It is the product of a series of decisions taken over the whole of a person's life. If we die and all we've developed is a particularly bad kind of character, then we'd be left in a state that is permanently incompatible with God.
God's love is infinite but he can't force us to love him for love is freely given. In the end, it is us who chooses whether to love him or not. Hell is a final "no" to God's love.
But I remembered JPII in fact say that Hell is a permanent state of separation from God...
GOD who is INFINITE IN LOVE AND MERCY can never punish a person for ETERNITY for committing a grave sin in his given lifetime lets say for living his life for 60 years or more! I could never imagine a GOD who is INFINITE LOVE (BOUNDLESS AS AN OCEAN AND THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE) can punish and torture a lonely creature for ETERNITY and without END! Can you imagine PUNISHEMENT AS ETERNITY compared to the INFINITE MERCY AND JUSTICE OF GOD? I cannot!
^ That is truly an unbearable thought. But that's why he came down here to give his life and salvage us from the power of sin. Becoming man, living with us, accepting the challenges we face daily as human beings, and ultimately dying for us on the cross, he already showed us his infinite love.
Yes God's love is infinite, but he is also infinitely just.
Maybe all he really knows is that all of us can go to Heaven or Hell if we so choose. Life actually presents us with countless opportunities for choosing life, goodness, purity, holiness, greatness, virtue, joy, love -- for choosing God.
