Hehe. Actually Rochelle is right. Albino GSD is a genetic defect- the recessive gene is exhibited instead of the dominant gene. (just like hemophilia and color-blindness in humans is a recessive gene that comes comes out every few generations).

And along with the white color comes a plethora of other problems- less resistance to diseases, shorter life span, etc. (Example: Dalmatians with different colored eyes are most of the time also deaf).

Unfortunately we cant stop unscrupulous breeders from advertising anomalies of nature as rare because in truth they are rare.

Further Example: Even monorchidism (male one ball wonders) is a genetic defect and if correct breeding standards are to be followed- the entire line is supposed to be culled or neutered so they cannot be bred anymore as each male (even if both testicles are present) and female puppy produced carries the recessive gene coding for monorchidism.

But chances are the complete males are still bred- thereby proliferating the said recessive gene. And therefore, one ball or zero ball puppies come out in litters produced by 2-testicle stud and bitch born of father with both balls intact, etc.

Some breeders are really very irresponsible. And i believe it is commerce that encourages this. If people are willing to pay huge sums for defective but unique-looking puppies, then expect future lines of puppies to be less than stellar in genetic signature.

I am not trying to start an argument here. Just stating scientific facts.So i hope no one gets offended by my comment.

Albino GSD's are defects and abnormalities. White GSD's are not. They are both different in physical attributes. I have seen an Albino GSD and is never near to being compared to WGSD's. they are much smaller in size, their eyes, nose are pink. One can really tell the difference if they see a WGSD.

I dunno why people insist on their scientific nonsense. Max Von Stephanitz the founder of GSD has WGSD's, and he stressed that "No dog can be a bad color". I dont believe in that health risk crap. I know several breeders of WGSD's and their dogs are perfectly healthy. People should read more articles about this dog and try to have both sides of the story and not being one sided.

If WGSD's are defects, then why are there lots of breeders in the USA, Europe and Canada? Their laws and legislations are scientifically up to date and correct. If WGSD's are unhealthy, then why breeders still breeding them with full knowledge of the AKC and other organizations, instead they can pass a bill of not breeding defective dogs.

People should read articles first before posting insignificant claims to know both sides of the story. :mrgreen:

I have searched arguments, debates about white GSD's and their health attributes. So far they outnumber the defect belief. They are much prefered than colored ones in the U.S. for home and pet use. The defect notion is an old preference which is slowly decaying.

Before I bought a WGSD, I was skeptic about thier traits and especially their health risks. But when I found out about the Quality of the dogs, they pose no threat.

I agree that some breeds exhibiting the White recessive color are defects like albino dobermans, there is no such thing as white dobermans, and so as other unnatural colors. But WGSD stand through the test of time and is also mixed woth colored ones to achieve the best results. Maybe WGSD's are defects at first but through selective breeding and evolution, they stand and formed a much more competitive breed.
