Paratroopers aren't usually classified as "spec ops", thus the apparent "exclusivity" of the the HK416 is probably hyped.

mejo OT na jud ni, pero cge lang.

hk416 is too expensive to be issued to everyone, more expensive than the colt m4. so we can understand why the US gov't won't give it to just anyone. and that's also the reason why we can only dream that the afp will start using it anytime soon.

This thread is mis-titled. It should really be "military presence" not "military intervention." Unless there's something going on in Mindanao we're not privy to.

I don't think the choice of sticking with the M4 is a cost issue. It's more of a political issue. HK is a German brand, Colt is American. 20 years ago, HK already proposed a replacement for the US M16A2, the HK G41...it uses the SAME magazines as the M16/M4, and was better than the M16 in many aspects. But back then, HK didn't even have their Virginia Plant yet, and thus HK was really seen as an "outsider" and was seen as having no "K" in peddling their arms to the US Armed Forces.

In other ways, the decision making dilemma is parallel to the Dragon armor vs. Interceptor armor issue.

The "416" designation is supposedly an amalgamation of the numbers M4 and M16.

With sufficient experience in Iraq and Afghanistan, could the US now be looking at replacing the M4 in the near future?

Here's something worth reading for those interested in what's happening down South, i.e. Basilan, Jolo, Sulu...

It's a blog by Michael Yon, a veteran reporter who has covered conflict zones like Iraq and Afghanistan. He calls the situation in Jolo "The nicest war I've been to."

Yon is also a former Green Beret and is known for his unabashed conservative (i.e. pro-US, pro-soldier) stance on war reporting. He was once embedded with a US Army unit in Mosul, Iraq that found itself embroiled in an alley fight. He grabbed a soldier's rifle and fired back.

Nonetheless, his blog makes good reading. And he's a darned good writer.
