You could almost breathe in the anticipation felt inside the Mouton Room at the magnificent Wynn Las Vegas Resort, where the final press conference for Morales vs. Pacquiao II was held earlier today. “THE BATTLE” as the rematch is being dubbed looks to live up to its given name as both fighters came into today’s press conference looking physically and mentally ready to wage war on each other come Saturday.

“I’m prepared for this fight, I feel ready, I feel even better than last time,” stated Morales who appeared more relaxed and clear headed than at any previous final press conference we’ve seen him at in recent years.

As Morales smiled and laughed with his manager, Fernando Beltran, during the press conference, his demeanor gave the impression that he wanted to jump out of his collared shirt and sweater, put on some sweats and hit the bags right then and there. “We’ve done great work, great preparation both mental and physical” said the three time world champion. “I’ve had no problem with my weight; I’m probably a pound or pound and half over right now.”

Morales’ words and body language gave the impression that he knew this fight is his to win; as if he already learned what cards Pacquiao is holding during their first fight. It seemed that Morales genuinely felt that there is nothing Pacquiao has that can hurt him.

“I never felt his power; from the first round I never felt his power.” Said Morales “In the twelfth round it was more because I’m not used to fighting left handed. If it really would have hurt me I would have turned around and fought right handed.”

Morales said he is ready for Pacquiao whether his gameplane is trying for a knockout or decision victory, “I don’t think he’s a techniquely sound fighter I think he depends on his power. If I had to rate his defenses I’d would think he’s a 5 out of 10.”

Morales, who split his long time trainer and father in preparation for this bout, said that there’s no love loss between the two. “I’ve spoken with him and he’s said it's fine, we have a good relationship, but once in a while I’ll read paper in Mexico that he’s saying stuff, but he’s never told me anything.”

Morales kept that relaxed look about him until Pacquiao’s promoter Gary Shaw took the podium and began speaking. After giving his usual public service announcement for people over 40 to get a blood test to check for prostate cancer; Shaw went on to reply to an earlier comment from Bob Arum. The comment was that it seems like Gary Shaw is always the other promoter. Shaw agreed and added that when it’s an exciting to watch Hispanic fighter, it seems like it’s always Fernando Beltran there. This drew a loud and unprovoked disruption from an unidentified Morales supporter in the back of the room who yelled at Shaw to “Shut Up” in Spanish, followed by a couple “Viva Mexicos” for good measure.

Shaw ignored the interference and continued to hype the fight. “I guarantee everything will be different, Manny has no distractions, he’s in a beautiful suite, provided by the Wynn hotel. He is happy he’s eating well, he’s not distracted, he’ll have the gloves of his choice and there will be NO EXCUSES,” said Shaw, as Morales’ facial expression went from a smile to an annoyed look.

Shaw now irritatingly responded to more cries of “Viva Mexico” and “Viva Morales” that continued to interrupt him, with his own, “Viva the Philippines and I guarantee you when you go to the Thomas & Mack, we will outnumber you Mexicanos.”

Outside of Shaw neither camp seemed to mind the showing of patriotism, until the same gentlemen became so disruptive and out of line that some in attendance, including myself, could not hear those on the podium. After Gary Shaw introduced Manny as the “only fighter to speak English at this microphone,” Pacquiao took the mic and wished all a good day.

While at the podium making a valiant effort to speak only in English, in order to accommodate the mostly English speaking press in attendance; Pacquiao was again interrupted by the same gentleman who obscenely cried for Pacquiao to “Speak English,” As to insult the Filipino icon’s accent and broken English. This very distasteful comment drew a resounding hush from most in attendance both Mexicans and Filipino alike. However it was received with a friendly, “Viva Mexico” reply from Pacquiao. Who with a smile was amazingly tolerant of the disruptions, and seemed to only want to please all in attendance, jackass included.

Pacquiao continued to add, “It’s going to be a good fight. Both of us worked real hard and we’re going to give you a good fight on Saturday,” as he left the podium confident he would give his fans a victory come Saturday night.

With Pacquiao’s Team assuring there are no more distractions for Manny, they also assure there will be no excuses. “Whoever loses this fight, will have lost only because they could not win, no excuses. The best man will win Saturday,” promised Shaw

“The Battle” will be available on HBO PPV for $44.95 and the local Las Vegas blackout has been lifted. Tickets are still available at Wynn Resort’s Box Office, the Thomas & Mack ticket office and UNLVTICKETS.com. Few tickets are still available at $50, $100, $200, $300 and $500.

At the age of 29, Erik is universally recognized as one of the best boxers in the world at any weight, "Pound for Pound." He is also one of the most exciting, and has fought in several of the most thrilling battles in recent years.

On March 19, 2005, Erik scored a sensational 12-round decision against former two-time world champion Manny Pacquiao. After the fight, Tim Dahlberg of the Associated Press reported from ringside, "Morales, fighting with the cool precision of a champion who has been there many times before, got the better of Pacquiao with jabs and big right hands…they didn't disappoint, going after each other from the opening bell in a fight that grew in intensity…the two fighters went toe-to-toe in a frenetic 12th round that had the crowd standing and cheering."

Some people feel that Pacquiao was not at his best when I beat him, but I think he was. But if there are some doubts about my victory last spring I will erase them in a second fight. I thought I won clearly the first time and will do so again.

At the post-fight press conference, Erik said, "It was a great pleasure to fight this way. I think I was controlling the fight with my distance. Sometimes I need to put a little flavor into the ring. My promoter always says that I make the fights very difficult, but they're not difficult, they're fun for the public. I decided to stop myself in front of him in the twelfth round because I wanted to give the public what they deserve. It was a great round. I'm very happy about it."

On November 2, 2004 in Las Vegas, Morales lost a 12 round majority decision - by the narrowest of margins - against Marco Antonio Barrera (58-4). Their highly-anticipated third fight drew a capacity crowd of 11,162 at the MGM Grand, and it was a spectacular battle. Barrera started fast, he rocked Erik late in the 1st round and bloodied his nose in the 2nd, and after six rounds led by scores of 58-56, 58-56, 59-55. But Erik came back strongly in the second half of the fight, and won four of the last six rounds on two judges' scorecards; the third judge scored the same except for the 11th, which he scored even, and it made the difference for Erik between a draw and a loss - 115-113, 115-114, 114-114; after the fight, Erik said, "I felt a little tight early, I couldn't get my jab off. I know I gave away a lot of early rounds."

Erik won the WBC super featherweight world title in February, 2004, and became only the second fighter from Mexico to win world titles in three weight divisions - Julio Cesar Chavez was the first. A pro since the age of 16, Erik has given impressive performances at the highest levels of competition and scored several spectacular wins. He has defeated world champions Carlos Hernandez, Jesus Chavez, Paulie Ayala, Guty Espadas twice, Marco Antonio Barrera, Wayne McCullough, Junior Jones, Jose Luis Bueno, Daniel Zaragoza, and Hector Acero-Sanchez.

AMATEUR, PERSONAL BACKGROUND: Erik was born in Tijuana in a building owned by his father…his family lived there and his father operated a boxing gym there, as well; the building was recently renovated and the gym was expanded; the family no longer lives there, but Erik still trains there at times…the building also houses the offices for Erik's web boxing magazine - Box-latino.com - which features boxing news…

At the age of 26, Manny is a ten-year pro - he made his debut at the age of 16. A former two-time world champion, he won the WBC flyweight world title two weeks before his 20th birthday in December, 1998, and held the title for nearly a year. He held the IBF jr. featherweight world title from June, 2001, until he vacated it on January 15, 2004, to move up to the featherweight division.

An aggressive lefthanded slugger, Manny is recognized as one of the hardest punchers at any weight. He is 14-1-2 in his last 17 fights, with all 14 wins coming by knockout. In his last fight on September 10, he TKO'd Hector Velazquez in the sixth round.

Manny has been fighting at the top levels of competition, and has been in several of the most exciting fights of recent years.

"Quite simply, Pacquiao is one of the hottest fighters in the business. There is a saying in American boxing: 'Speed kills.' When that speed is accompanied by power, it is truly a formidable combination - and Pacquiao has it." - Graham Houston, Boxing Monthly.

Boxing columnist Michael Katz wrote, "He ran away from the corn and rice fields at the age of 12 because his mother didn't' want him to box. So he hustled at pool, conned a few kids at basketball, and turned pro right after his 16th birthday as a junior flyweight. Now he is on the cusp of becoming perhaps the greatest Asian fighter to conquer the West since Genghis Khan."

On March 19, 2005, he lost a very close decision in a tremendous battle against Erik Morales. Manny fought to a 12-round draw on May 8, 2004, against Juan Manuel Marquez in a fight many observers consider to be the "Fight of the Year."

In November, 2003, he scored a devastating TKO win against former three-time world champoon Marco Antonio Barrera last November in San Antonio. After the fight, HBO boxing analyst Larry Merchant said, "This is a fight that will shake up the boxing world. Long live the new king."

John Whisler of the San Antonio Express-News reported from ringside, "Never has a fighter physically dominated the classy Barrera the way Pacquiao did, so convincingly and thoroughly that by the middle of the 11th round, the only question that remained was whether or not the game but beaten Barrera would finish the fight. He couldn't."

Dan Rafael of USA Today wrote, "Pacquiao, the reigning junior featherweight champ moving up in weight, administered a one-sided beating to Barrera, considered one of the top fighters in the world pound-for-pound. Using superior speed and power, Pacquiao…ravaged him with a two-fisted attack…"

Manny is a national hero in the Philippines - when he returns home after his fights, he is greeted by thousands of his cheering countrymen.

Among his fans is Philippines President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. She said, "The victory of Pacquiao is a victory of the more than 76 million Filipinos, and the entire nation joins him in celebrating."

Manny was born in General Santos City, Philippines, his parents were farmers, and Manny worked in the rice and corn fields with them from the age of eight until he ran away from home at 12.

He reportedly had 64 amateur fights (60-4), he said, "When I was younger, I watched so many videos of Larry Holmes, Joe Frazier, George Foreman and others. I used to rent the videos."

Manny has starred in popular Filipino action movies with his friend, Mikey Arroyo, the son of the Philippines President. Manny enjoys playing pool in his spare time. Manny and his wife Jinky have two children.

Strengths: HBO PPV.com Strengths:
"El Terrible" possesses an excellent, and hard, left jab and a long, hard right cross. Coupled with his height advantage and his excellent counter-punching ability, he should be able to convert these plusses into an advantage over the shorter Pacquiao who tends to leave himself open.

Morales has a set of tough whiskers, which he proved in the 12th round of the first fight when he went toe-to-toe with the hard-hitting Pacquiao, giving as well as he got.

Last time Morales had a psychological reason for beating Pacquiao, wanting to beat the man-who-beat-the-man-who-beat-him two out of three (Barrera) and prove he was Mexico's best. If he can maintain that psychological edge it will give him an added intangible plus.

Manny Pacquiao is fast, fast, fast. Not only does he get out of the gate quickly--as witnessed by his three-knockdowns in the first round against Juan Manuel Marquez--but comes at his opponent quickly in a hell-bent-for-leather manner throwing punches.

"Pac Man" moves in behind a sharp right jab from his southpaw stance, oftimes doubling it up, and then follows with a powerful left--including hooks and uppercuts--which in range, tend to be very effective.

Well-conditioned, Pacquiao possesses bottomless energies, enabling him to maintain his almost windmill-like attack throughout.

Last time versus Morales, Pacquiao wore gloves his trainer, Freddie Roach, called "the wrong gloves." This time he will be using "Reyes" gloves, called "punchers gloves," which should benefit this puncher greatly.

An average defensive fighter, Morales doesn't move his head well and keeps his chin up and exposed. Also, holds hands wide apart, leaving him vulnerable to Pacquiao's straight left down the middle.

Morales doesn't fight well when backed up into the ropes. He leans straight back to avoid getting hit by incoming punches, a dangerous tactic against a straight-punching Pacquiao.

Morales has had trouble in the past with movement, (Here see his loss to Zahir Raheem, who befuddled him with his elusiveness, ditto Marco Antonio Barrera in the second fight). However, Pacquiao has shown no such movement in his 45 previous fights and should be there, right in front of Morales the entire fight.


Pacquiao is a one-and-a-two Lawrence Welk-type fighter who comes in behind a right jab and a straight left. The southpaw comes in straight at his opponent with hands held too low and little head movement and rarely varies his attack or movement. His lack of a right hook or anything resembling such also contributes to his being one-dimensional.

After throwing a punch the "Pac Man" tends to bring his hands back in a low position leaving himself vulnerable to counters, a Morales specialty.

Pacquiao's all-out style is built for offense, not defense, and he sometimes has trouble when his opponent moves out of range and doesn't stand directly in front of him.

The idol of 87 million Filipinos, Pacquiao admits he "feels the pressure" to avenge the first fight loss to Morales, placing another burden on his shoulders.

Morales must put to good use his advantage in height and use his much longer (and straighter) left jab to maintain control of the fight as he did in the middle rounds of their first match.

Morales must move on Pacquiao, who has trouble with movement, keeping the fight at long range and in mid-ring and not back into the ropes.

And Morales can not afford to engage in a slugging match but must fight a disciplined fight, continually turning Pacquiao, countering him and moving, keeping Pacquiao off-balance and at the end of his long, stiff left jab and straight right. Pacquiao must move more--and here he promises "a surprise"--staying on top of Morales and forcing him backwards, into the ropes and into corners. The

Pac Man must keep his hands up to thwart Morales' counters and move into range behind his right jab.

Pacquiao must draw Morales into a slugfest, as he did in the 12th round of their first encounter when he staggered Morales.

And Pacquiao must add movement and a right hook to his arsenal--something he promises as "a surprise."
