PSP Firmware Version 5.5 Update
Well, get a load of this! The latest firmware for the PSP will be going live tomorrow! Looks like Dark AleX might be pushed into creating a custom firmware for this because the PSP FW v5.50 system update has got some huge features packed into it: creating and viewing folders on the XMB, the addition of the Information Board (kinda like the upper-right scrolling ticker box on the PS3), and a bunch of Internet browser additions.
Here's what we can expect:
* The firmware update will introduce an Information Board on the PSP system’s XMB (XrossMediaBar) interface. Those of you who have a PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3) may be familiar with this feature, which displays news and updates from the world of PlayStation in a scrolling ticker in the upper right-hand corner of your TV screen. Now you’ll be able to read up-to-date information about upcoming games, new content available on PlayStation Store, and other news right on your PSP whenever you’re at a wireless Internet hotspot.
* The v5.50 upgrade means you no longer need a PlayStationŽNetwork account to do a quick bit of window shopping – you can check out all the latest games, trailers and demos available for download from your PSP. (From SCEE press release)
* Memory Stick improvements – You’ll be able to create and access sub-folders on your Memory Stick PRO Duo for music, videos and photos. Separately, the available space required to download a file from PlayStation Store to your Memory Stick has been reduced significantly.
* Internet search for games directly from the XMB – You’ll be able to easily search the Internet for information about your PSP games. Select the icon for the game, hit the Triangle button, and then select [Internet Search] from the options menu to get search results based on the game title. This feature was added to PS3 with the recent 2.70 update.
* Trend Micro trial – PSP’s Internet browser is a great tool for checking out your favorite Web sites on the go, and we’re teaming up with the Internet security experts at Trend Micro to make the Web browsing experience safer and more secure. With the 5.50 update, you’ll have the option to access a free trial of two Trend Micro services:
o Trend Micro Web Security uses Web reputation technology to block PSP owners from accidentally visiting a Web site that may contain malicious content designed to steal personal information and confidential data.
o Trend Micro Kids’ Safety uses URL filtering technology to prevent children from accessing Web sites that feature inappropriate content.
The PlayStation blog didn't mention what exact time the FW update will be available. We'll just give you guys word once this baby hits the servers.

HEN Release Update
Update 4/21/09: It will not be released tonight (9:30PM EST as I'm writing this) and Davee will be gone for a good portion of the end of the week so there is no idea as to a new potential release date. We all ask for your patience as we work through these moments of anticipation and excitement.
NOTE: Davee and crew have been hard at work on getting HEN for us however they have ran into quite a few problems and have been working diligently to solve them. We ask for your patience at this time, we do not have an estimate for the release date (Davee originally said "by Tuesday" but that was before the complications arose). We will update you on any progress we get notified of!
For information and earlier discussion of the TIFF exploit itself, see [RELEASE] 5.03 TIFF Hello World - M for Mature Forums
With the upcoming release of HEN (Homebrew Enabler) for the PSP using MatiAz's tiff exploit there has been some heated discussions on the topic. Davee, who will be releasing the HEN in the coming days (at least that's the planned release), has answered most of the questions people have been asking but it has been difficult to find them.
Here's some information about the upcoming HEN that you should know
* Currently set for a release this Tuesday (maybe Wednesday for some of you in China)
* It will not allow the execution of ISOs - at least not natively
* Some PSPs will be able to have CFW flashed while other models will be left out (due to Motherboard issues and limitations)
* HEN will enable most homebrew execution but some older homebrew may require some tinkering to work on the new HEN
o At this point all we know is there could be compatibility issues; there's nothing to say which homebrew games, apps, or emulators will or will not work. It can be assumed that 1.5 kernel specific homebrew won't work but beyond that we will have to wait and see.
o According to Davee, there will possibly be support for some plugins in a later version.
* POPs will not be supported (meaning you cannot run PSX ISOs, sorry)
* Some motherboards will not be supported for CFW use (as well as anyone who was previously unable to use Pandora)
o TA-088 V3 and TA-090 V2 Motherboards are not supported (for CFW)
Note: KezraPlanes has also made a FAQ of his own [here]
For those wanting to pirate PSP games you will be out of luck. You can claim that you want to pirate because you have no money (well then why'd you buy it in the first place!) but others claim they want to backup their games. You can try to justify piracy but in the end, it's the same thing - piracy.
Exploits in the past have been made for the purpose of enabling homebrew, not enabling piracy (keep that in mind).

According to a 1UP report, Sony will debut a revised edition of PSP hardware at this year’s E3 in June, dubbed the “PSP Go!” The moniker is presumably designed to fit alongside Sony’s Go! brand of hardware and software additions, such as the Go! Cam and Go! View.
The site’s source alleges that the PSP-4000, as it has been internally named until now, will pack a substantial amount of internal flash memory. While there is no word on exactly how much, either 8 or 16GB of space is being presumed. As previous rumors have strongly alluded to, as well as reports from industry vets in the know, this revision will also do away with the built-in UMD drive.
Considering we’ve already heard of retail-quality efforts like Patapon 2 and Fighter Fate/unlimited codes going digital, this is far from an outlandish prospect. It makes sense, especially since Sony is now putting a considerable amount of momentum behind the digital movement.
Also, sorry to dash hopes, but PSP Go! will not include a second analog stick if 1UP’s report is to believed. If there is a chance of it happening, you’re going to have to wait out for a true successor to the PSP. The hardware itself however is undergoing an aesthetic revamp — apparently similar to the compact mock-up pictured above — which depicts a top-front sliding screen with face buttons wedged firmly underneath.
Keep in mind this is still all unconfirmed, but if true, the new hardware should hit before the holiday season worldwide, possibly late October or early November here in the states. Again, an announcement is expected at E3 2009.
