    Default Computers and Electricity Bill

This is always the experience that i heard from students who occupy rooms in boarding houses and dormitories.

Well, basically any additional appliance used would incur an additional monthly fee. Some would charge P100 for the fan. another P100 for the radio and even P100 for a cellphone charger. Oh my!!

You would be lucky enough if the owner is knowledgeable in fields of electrical and electronics aspects.

Now here is the issue. Computers are always considered as power hungry appliance. Well from a non-technical point of view. Naa ko kaila nga dako pa sya ginabayran (fixed charge) sa iya computer ksa iya plantsa every month.

My question now is, which of the two - monitor or CPU, consumes power the most? Lets just assume a standard computer unit.

here's from my own specs at home:

    17inch crt monitor = 80watts

    What's in the PC: = 225watts
    Athlon 2800+ = 74watts
    G 6800 AGP = 49watts
    1 stick ram = 10watts
    1 hdd = 25watts
    1 cd rom = 20watts
    2 usb = 10watts
    3 fans = 6watts
    mobo = 31watts

    from other sources
    21inch crt monitor = 125 watts
    17inch LCd = 40watts

say if you have 17" crt monitor and PC with 300watts(let's assume it's max) you have
0.5 hp of electricity spent.. huhuhu

CPU tingali ang dako ug power consumption. ang monthly bill sa whole set computer average ug P500 a month, approximately, depende sa specs and hrs used.

Lets take bro fd's specification, 225watts for the CPU plus 80watts for the monitor (225watts + 80watts = 305watts). Assuming the average daily usage of the computer is 10hrs. Power is calculated by kilowatts/hour. Now to get the total wattage 305watts X 10hr = 3050watts, to get the total kilowatt/hour lets divided by 1000 the total wattage consumed, 3050 / 1000 = 3.05, let say kilowatt/hour rate of VECO is P4.00 so 3.05 x 4 = 12.2 pesos thats for a day. In 30 days you'll pay 366 pesos or even lower because some of the peripherals are not used frequently like the CDROM and other devices.
