    Default Canon 17-85 IS USM

Has anyone got any experiences of this lens? What do you think of it? Is this a good replacement for the kit lens?

from what I know USM is usually for silent capturing.. I also know that people say Kit lens capture Crappy shots.. but personally I did some Photoshoot with kit Lens, and you know what? Try shooting at f/8. its known as the sweet spot. It yields some pretty impressive results.

i've been crushing on this lens gyd. hehe 17-85mm..

if the 18-200mm is way beyond your stash, i'd say the 17-85mm is the best alternative.. you can use this as a walk around lens..This lens can cover from wide angle to telephoto photography.. ü

*** naghuwat pa ko sa akong 17-85mm, naa pa sa Canada. hopefully maabot nah.

@vanjhnn: I agree, f/8 for the kit lens is indeed the sweetest spot. hehe.

    check this review from photozone.de:

    Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 USM IS - Retest @ 15MP / Review

    the canon 17-85 f4-5.6 is around 32,000

another nice alternative to consider would be the...

sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 available in cebu for 17,500
Sigma AF 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC macro - Test Report / Review

sigma 24-70 f2.8 macro available in cebu for 25,500
Sigma AF 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG macro (Canon) Lab Test Report / Review

both are very good sharp lenses with bigger openings
albeit sans IS though better in quality than the 17-85
based on the reviews and at a much cheaper price

I was able to borrow a 17-85 to try it out and after
using it for awhile went with the sigma 17-70 instead

nice review bro, pero when it comes to auto focus speed, hinai man siguro kai ang sigma. nice ang sigma kai nanai lens hood. What if pariho sila ug price, sigma or canon?...

  8. #8
why not try them out first? their AF speeds are rated as fast.
but if you really have your mind set on Canon already I'd rather
save a couple more thousand and go with the 17-40 f4 L. I've
gotten very good results with that lens.

I was just about in the same spot as you when I was looking
for suitable replacement for Canon's kit and was able to borrow
both the 17-85 and the 17-70 from friends to try them out. I really
wanted to go with the 17-85 due to it's IS, longer range, and it
was a Canon... but in the end it wasn't giving me what I really needed.
and I was pleased with the results of the 17-70 so I went with the
    Sigma instead.

and as with anything... it all boils down to personal preferences
so try to get a hold of the lenses and lock them on your camera then
take them out for a test drive and kick the tires around a bit.

    from photozone.de verdicts:

Sigma AF 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC macro
"Sigma has positioned the AF 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC macro in one of the sweet spots of the market. It is priced beyond the (usually pretty crappy) kit zooms yet it still remains within the reach of budget shoppers. Even better than that it delivers a performance which matches and sometimes even exceeds more expensive lenses. This includes the in-house competition (AF 18-50mm f/2.8 EX) as well as genuine brand lenses (such as the Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 USM IS). All in all the lens has only one really weak spot - 17mm at wide-open aperture where the extreme border performance is soft and vignetting is quite pronounced (but still not worse than the direct competition). At medium aperture settings the delivered quality is very impressive. Combine that with the quite decent build quality and fast AF and it doesn't need a genius to foresee that this lens will be a quite hot seller."

Sigma AF 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG macro
"The Sigma AF 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG macro showed an impressive performance throughout all characteristics. It is a very sharp lens at all mainstream aperture settings. Distortions, CAs as well as vignetting are moderate and usually nothing to worry about. The build quality is very fine and the AF is pretty fast despite the enormous glass elements and a conventional AF micro-motor. The biggest problem of the Sigma is not performance but its scope. When used on APS-C DSLRs the zoom range (38-112mm) doesn't really qualify it as a standard zoom in the true sense although it surely has some appeal for press and basic portrait photography. It will be interesting to see how this lens will perform within the full format test scope. - highly recommended"

    Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 USM IS
"The Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 USM IS is a lens that promises many things. It is certainly a very versatile standard zoom with a long zoom range and an image stabilizer that can save the day in many situations. However, the build quality is somewhat disappointing and optically it is also something of a mixed bag. The lens is very sharp in the image center throughout the range but at the wide-end the corners are generally somewhat softer (but still acceptable). The 17mm setting also suffers from rather extreme distortions and rather hefty vignetting @ f/4. Finally chromatic aberrations aren't really something to rave about either.

So at the end of the day it remains a lens with a couple of compromises in terms of quality. It is more versatile in terms of range than the EF-S 17-55mm IS and EF-S 18-55mm IS and a bit better compared to the new EF-S 18-200mm IS."

if you are considering a full frame body in the future like 5D or 1D, you cant use your EF-S on them, but i dont know if you can use these sigma lenses on full-frame bodies, but i have read in a forum that it is possible.
before, i was canon-minded, until i tried Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8. in the other hand, IS feature is good, specially you have a low aperture (f4.0) gamit kaayo in low-light condition, but in sigma ok ra sad kay 2.8 ang aperture...

here try this link so that you can compare the sharpness of the 3 lenses....

Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Lens - Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens Comparison - ISO 12233 Resolution Chart Results

    P.S.
either of the 3 lenses nindot e pares ug 70-200.
