"Honorable" by Eddie O Barrita
Hong Kong Magazine's publisher Asia City Publishing Group has apologized for Chip Tsao's article labeling the Philippines "a nation of servants."
A word of caution for Chip and the masters: Be kind to your servants, especially if you don't make your own coffee.
Lots of you are full of it. It is amazing that people seem to spend so much time defending themselves that they forget that there is real work to be done. People are so busy defending themselves that they elect officials that walk all over their rights, their dignity and their self-respect. It is OK for other Filipinos to make us look like fools to the world, as long as no one else criticizes us. tsk tsk tsk. This topic = epic fail.
well, the way chip tsao presented it was way off, how she threaten and malign Louisa is irritating, but what is not true about it? are we not known for being domestic helpers in hongkong? the last time i knew, the number one recruiter is no less than our philippine government, they are calling them heroes, and suddenly now they are embarrass by such fact?
even before, i disagree why we call OFW heroes. they were there in the simple reason that the government cannot provide them jobs, they are the mirror of how inefficient our government is and our government are calling them heroes? honestly and frankly speaking, can you find a single OFW who work abroad for the reason of helping our GNP, or help lower inflation rate? no, their main reason is to make their lives better, for them and their family. helping the government is just incidental. AND I AM NOT SAYING THAT THEY ARE WRONG, OR BAD, OR SOMETHING, my point is, it is our government who encourage this and allow this to happen.
Spratlys, can you honestly think that our government has the slimmest of chance if indeed China will declare war against us? We cannot even exterminate Abu Sayaff for crying out loud! China, a rising super power, even the thought of declaring war is insane. And yes, our government benefited from OFW remittances from HK, that is so true. Google it, we comprise more than half of the foreign domestic helpers in HK. Well, stay tune, because maybe next time, another chip tsao will make an article about care givers, and again, we will be insulted.
The way Chip Tsao wrote it, it is insulting, no question about that. Discriminating, yes. But we are creating it, some of us even dream of working as DH in HongKong, until maybe just recently, when some realize and was awaken by Chip Tsao.
LOOK AT DOLE WEBSITE, LOOK AT THE VACANCIES BEING ADVERTISED BY DOLE, come to think of it, more than 90% of it is manual labor and DH jobs. What does that tells us?
"LOOK AT DOLE WEBSITE, LOOK AT THE VACANCIES BEING ADVERTISED BY DOLE, come to think of it, more than 90% of it is manual labor and DH jobs. What does that tells us?"
That my friend tells us that there is a shortage of labor force in other places of the world because not everyone has the capacity to raise their population enough to provide enough citizens to propel their relatively bigger economies.
In the current state of the world today, EVERYONE (First World - Fift World Country) NEEDS each other. The global job market is all the more becoming one and that is not something even the strongest nation (if there is even one) in this planet can stop.
Regardless of what kind of profession or service a person from whatever country provides, he/she is not a servant. He is a professional and should be treated like one - Professional DH or otherwise.
OT: back to work na me! hehe................. "WORK - WORK!" "JOBS DONE!" but I am not a PEON by any means..... hehe...

Abangan Ang Susunod Na Kabanata - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This TV show was a satire of all the negative behavior, attitudes and practices of Filipinos. But, did we condemn Tessie Tomas and Noel Trinidad and the rest of the people in the show? What about the writers of the show? Jose Javier Reyes? Did we ever condemn him?
No...we laughed, and laughed, and laughed...at ourselves.
Heck, the show even won Third Place in the 1992 New York Festival for Television.
Magbagutbot ra man ta, pag sultihan ta sa ubang tawo.
Another case of twisted double standards.
-RODION
so true, we need each other. that is why we cannot afford to quarrel them and risk loosing hundreds of thousands of jobs. again, at the directions our government is taking us, we cannot risk to be too proud.
reality sucks, lets just make the best out of this so called "insult".
Indolent Indio / Chip Tsao may be a racist, but what are you?
Legend has it that God (and/or Bathala) created man out of clay, baking the prototypes in his oven just because he could. Not yet having the hang of his omnipotence, Bathala ****ed up and burnt the first man, hence the African race. He ****ed up again, probably drunk on fermented rice wine, being primarily a rice god, and created the Caucasians when the he took man out too early. Also the Chinese, when he messed up again before finally creating the perfect man, the brown man. And so it goes.
And if you believe that, then you were probably foaming at the mouth when Chinese columnist Chip Tsao played the racist card and called us a nation of servants. [UPDATE: HK Magazine has taken down the offending article. You may view it here. Thanks to joyfulchicken for the tip.]
And right then and there, all the trolls and armchair nationalists, who never even took ROTC, rose to the defense of Inang Bayan and tried to spam the guy with racist comments of their own.
Never mind that the whole maid-with-an-advanced-degree was already an old Hong Kong joke back in 1997. And true. Never mind that the part about our maids in Hong Kong being made to practice hailing Chairman Mao is something we do in each of our host countries.
We *were* panicking about the Chinese patrol ship in our part of the Spratlys and Malacanang even admitted to considering asking our allies for help.
Never mind that if push comes to shove, the might of our Armed Forces will back off from the Abu Sayyaf on the say-so of some guy from the International Red Cross. We can’t even manage less than a thousand guys with guns, and we have the internet tough guy balls to say things like “YOU should be hanged, just like your chinese friends, the BABYKILLERS!!!!” to the People’s Republic of China.
Never mind that we say pretty much the same things about ourselves. If someone else says it, we get so pumped up with fake patriotism that we’ll go online and trade high-fives with our friends for being the exact same asshole that we perceived our attacker to be.
If being someone’s maid, or nurse, or caretaker, or phone monkey isn’t anything to be ashamed of, then don’t take every opportunity to defend it against anyone who you think says that it is. You bought the ****ing ticket, or work visa or whatever, now take the ride.
Get real, Philippines. Not everyone is out to get us, and those that are… Well, they’re the ones that don’t joke about it. They just buy up our islands under dummy corporations, or influence our government for concessions or whatever.
It’s a joke, guys. One of the better ones, even. It reads like a proper British comedy sketch, and it’s actually pretty funny. Funnier than our Wowowee jokes, at any rate. And as Mikonawa points out, if you read closely, you’ll see that he wasn’t even poking fun at us, but at his fellow Chinese for “getting their panties in a bunch about the Spratlys.”
There is an anecdote told about Rizal: After dinner, his Spanish classmates supposedly left their banana peels on his plate for him to eat (being a monkey.) And you know what he did? He didn’t go all apeshit and leave anonymous notes about how the Spanish are ****tards or whatever. He calmly said that his classmates must be the monkeys since while he still had his banana peels, they must have already eaten theirs. Also, he beat them at fencing.
And that is how you respond to satire. With rapier wit and panache (and sometimes, an actual rapier.)
