Time picks Arroyo as one of ’people who mattered in 2005’
TIME Magazine has picked President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as one of the “People Who Mattered in 2005” and Malacañang on Wednesday said the world can't help but take notice of how the Chief Executive was able to overcome the worst political crisis to hit her administration.
Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita was elated that President Arroyo landed on Time's list in the company of world leaders such as US President George W. Bush.
The magazine acknowledged Arroyo for having survived an impeachment trial that put to question the legitimacy of her presidency.
"The mettle of a leader is tested when he is given those problems and when he is able to overcome them with flying colors," Ermita said in a news conference in Baguio City.
Despite the political attacks on the President, Ermita said Arroyo remained "unperturbed" and focused on her work, sparing the economy from the country’s political turmoil.
Haunted for months by calls for her ouster, Arroyo survived an opposition attempt to impeach her in September for allegedly rigging last year's election and for suspected corruption. Her overwhelming allies in Congress blocked the bid on a technicality.
Protests calling for her to quit have waned, even as coup rumors persist.
