9 texting Philippine cops end up doing push-ups
MANILA, Philippines - Nine new lawmen who just came out of training spent their first day at work at the Manila Police District (MPD) doing push-ups.
This was part of a punishment from MPD director Chief Superintendent Roberto Rosales who caught the nine police officers 1 (PO1) at ease and busy texting on their mobile phones during a flag ceremony.
The nine new policemen were part of a pool of recruits who went past the field training at the Police National Training Institute. New police recruits are first required to take the year-long training before they are deployed in various police districts in the country.
After completing their training, the nine erring MPD policemen were assigned at the police district Friday last week.
Rosales was quoted in a radio report as saying that he handed down the punishment only to remind that policemen, new and old ones alike, should display discipline at all times.
The MPD chief expressed his disappointment over the nine new policemen, especially since an official from the Department of Health was visiting the district police at the time of the flag ceremony.
The Philippine National Police had earlier said it was planning to recruit more than 3,000 new PO1s and another 4,000 replacement for police personnel who would had either died, retired, resigned, or had been dismissed from mid-2008 to early 2009.
The regular recruitment is still part of the presidential directive to recruit 15,000 PO1s from 2006 until 2011. -
