I tried 99designs.com once and so far on my first try I won a design contest and recieved $500 through paypal.

as for sa uban haven't tried them yet. i get most of my freelance projects before through a design agency and by word of mouth.

I agree. Odesk started out okay, but now, please expect the worst. You do get paid for hourly work, but you won't enjoy any form of protection for fixed-fee projects.

The site looks fairly new and the interface sucks. My two cents' worth: I'm not convinced. Maybe the owners get revenues from page views and intend to keep you floundering in the site for as long as possible.
