Twilight man kuno gud karon ang trend sa mga vampires!
i think vampirism exists today. not the blood-sucking kind, of course. but the psychic vampires. they are just normal people who can't seem to handle themselves well and so they NEED the attention, the care, the love, the money, the companionship, the everything of others and can't seem to stop until they've sucked you dry.
Popular Literature actually started with Rice's Vampire Chronicles which started with her publication of the Interview with the Vampire back in the 1973? It was in that book that Rice attempted to modernize the outlook of vampires, through her character Louis de pointe du lac who elaborates that vampires loves to sleep in coffin because its comfortable and that garlics and crucifixes does not scare them - a change from the classic outlook made famous by Stoker in his "Dracula"
the vampire subculture did not start with meyers' kindergarten saga of a vampire with teen issues. but i'd like to think that popular literature most particularly by Rice gave rise to this modern sub-culture. There is also a study, i forgot which one, that equate vampire blood sucking as something sexual- an issue on queer theory and gender studies, where sexuality paradoxically transcends sexuality, because one could engage in sexual intimacies without having to bother with sexual orientation - those are some metaphors on vampirism.
