    Default Maurice Noble

    Cartoon Modern :: Maurice Noble

    except for the link above i'll say something about my most favourite layout artist in all of animation his name is Maurice Noble who originally worked at Disney as a background artist then after the life changing 1942 Disney Strike which was the onset of the "impressionist' movement in the animation industry. Maurice worked at Warner's Looney Tunes at Termite Terrace, a dilapidated building located in the obscure part of the warner's lot. There he worked as a layout man for Chuck Jones' unit and since then he considered Looney Tunes as his home. The collaboration with Jones is the highlight of Maurice's career wherein he pioneered the "wonky" style and the artistic experimentation of shapes and color design that made the cartoon shorts he helped create rather unique than the rest of the Looney Tunes animation units. His imagination and artistic genius is evident in the Road Runner series in which his background designs complemented and interacted with the characters in such exciting, fresh and most importantly innovative during those times. Even today his work is still relevant to present day animators and layout artists. Before he passed away Maurice tutored a group of animators and animation artist in his ways. This group dubbed the "Noble Boys" is Maurice's farewell gift to the industry he most loved. His concept in designing innovative and exciting background layout uplifted the fine art of animation background art to a new level. His skewd perspective gives off a sense of playfulness and adventure that not even disney himself would dare to venture. His compositions always complemented the characters well and not compete for attention but still demands attention in a subtle way. His crowning work "What's Opera Doc?" is already preserved in the national archives as one of animations best and excellent work worthy of a place in fine art as well as in animation.
