I'm not sure if the parts are available here... yes, it is recommended to use a slave/external flash... are you using your cam's "macro setting" when taking macro shots? try diffusing your flash by putting 2-5 stacks of facial napkins and see if your images are still overexposed...

    digital pinhole experiment:

step 1: take a 300D, set to manual exposure, then take off lens

step 2: take a piece of cardboard and poke a pinhole

step 3: place area of cardboard with the pinhole over the lens mount of the camera, set exposure, and shoot...

congratulations!Â* you know have a 30,000 plus pinhole camera

    1/4 second @ iso 1600

...hmmmm... ...a bit too dark... so let's try a longer exposure...

    2 seconds @ iso 1600

I prefer a shorter exposure so let's make a bigger hole for more light (from pinhole to 1/4")...Â* by the way, orange/red tint is due that we're shooting through a small hole in a piece of cardboard...

...okay, the color tinge is gone but now everything is blurry with the very shallow depth of field.

oh, well... willl play around with that more laterÂ* Â* I heard that some photographers were able to get some good results by poking a hole in their camera's body cap.
