If you can secure a copy of the 1997 Spanish movie ABRE LOS OJOS directed by Alejandro Amenabar (with Penelope Cruz and Eduardo Noriega), try to watch it if you're not bothered reading subtitles. It's extremely superior compared to the Cameron Crowe 2001 re-make with Tom Cruise. That's what usually happens with re-makes, they lose the point. Because you know Crow saw Abre Los Ojos and he was superbly amazed that he decided to make his own version.

    ***SPOILERS BELOW***

The events that happen to David's life (Tom Cruz) after the car crash caused by Cameron Diaz are actually a dream. It is revealed then that he signed for Life Extension Program and an extra feature called Lucid Dreams, which was inserted when he passed out by the sidewalk. In this method, the body of the person is put on cryogenics and injected with the Lucid Dreams to create a memory while the body "sleeps". He all learns these through the help of the doctor played by Kurt Russell, who eventually ends up as another imagination that David created in his mind -- the father figure he always craved. The Kurt Russell character caused David to realize that the guilt he felt for the way he treated the Cameron Diaz character may have caused him to subconsciously merge the Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz images. Thus, he never really murdered someone.

Further, there is also a Tech Support accompanying the program for when things get complicated. Remember that there was this mysterious man who explains everything to David. Tech support then explains to David the real things that happen in his real life: 1. he never met again with the Penelope Cruz character 2. The business his father left him, which he owns majority of the shares, was saved by the lawyer whom he fired (or almost fired, not sure). 3. David who constantly suffers from depression (especially after his face got disfigured) eventually committed suicide. Following his suicide, Lucid Dreams commenced.

Since David has realized what's happening, tech support presented to David an upgrade to the program which will allow David to either: (a) be re-inserted into the lucid dream without any memory of the nightmare, or (b) have a restored body and be awakened in the present time which is 150 years from the time he was frozen. David eventually chose B even though he knows all people he knew are long dead and his wealth worthless.

David ventures into one last lucid-dream scene by the rooftop with Penelope Cruz who vows to find him again. He then leaps off and multiple images of his memory flash through his mind.

Then finally, the final shot whiteout followed by the sound of a woman's voice that says "open your eyes". Then an extreme close-up of the eye staring into the camera.

    ***SPOILERS END HERE***

    Hope that helps
