Default Help me overclock my pc..

    Ok here's what i have:

    2x1Gb DDR2-667 PQI
    Core2Duo E6600 @ 2.4Ghz with stock HSF
Palit 9800GT Sonice 512MB with Dual Heat Pipe OC Ed. 950/650/1975
    Gigabyte GA-945GM-S2 Mobo
    160 GB Sata
    500 Watts PSU

What is the safe OC'd setting for my CPU? How far can my C2D reach in terms of Ghz? Im just a newbie in OC.. Unsay rule in relation on CPU to RAM?

    Thanks!

are you willing to take the risk?
it can reduce the lifespan of your components.

To overclock, a primary requirement is that you must have a motherboard that supports it, and is a good overclocker. This is usually dependent on the manufacturer and the chipset used. Gigabyte, Asus are good brands when it comes to OC.

The chipset is also very important in OC. Some chipsets are known to be very good overclockers while some are not. Good OC chipsets are the Intel P35, P45 and X48. But still, you have to read motherboard reviews to know how high an actual motherboard can overclock (higher FSB).

Though your motherboard is from Gigabyte, it uses the older 945G Express chipset, which is not an overclocking chipset. Furthermore I found a review where it's stated that your motherboard doesn't even have overclocking options in the BIOS:

Gigabyte GA-945GM-S2 PCSTATS Review - Overclocking and Test System Specs

    An excerpt from the article:
Well, this is going to be rather disappointing overclocking analysis. There are no overclocking options available in the Gigabyte GA-945GM-S2's BIOS. Considering the intended market for this 945G Express based platform this is not a big loss. There are basic memory tweaks though.
If you really want to overclock, you might need to upgrade your motherboard. I don't see the point really, when you have a E6600 processor, which is fast enough for most tasks and should be able to handle your 9800gt just fine when gaming.

Thanks for the info, by the way, i can change the clock in my mobo... i dont know why it contradicts the article you posted. Im planning to get a good HSF though. Yah, i can play most games like assassins creed great with high settings. Well, will the stock settings provide me with the optimum functionality for my rig? no bottlenecks? I'm using it for gaming man gud... thanks!

I was just curious to OC my rig 'cause they said that with my C2D E6600 is really good for OC'ing... On some posts on the web, it reaches at around 3.4 Ghz... Does it really make a difference? How much Ghz does it take to make a difference in terms of performance?

bro I have the same procie also my E6600 is Prime 95 stable @ 3.4ghz at 58 deg maximum temp (ave of 54-56 deg). I had it stable at 3.5Ghz but temp was over 60 deg and this is over my procie spec as they told me, so I need to improve my cooling first before I will continue and 3.6 GHz is nice also but probably have to invest in a good fan for my case and CPU cooler. I've read that Delta 120mm fan is good but hard to find.

I'm also a noob in oc'ing and I'm still learning a lot of stuff everyday by reading the threads here, visiting sites like- Tom's hardware, tweaktown, extremeOC and listening to what the other istoryans have to say.

Good Luck to both of us

remember, if u'll OC, they will ask you during warranty request:

    1. Have you overclocked your system?

OC'ing is only advisable when your system is not anymore as good for your current need and you want some more extra juice from it. I would suggest OC'ing when imo distro warranties had expired for proci and mobo.

series 6xxx from intel overcolocks fairly well but... BUT.. init lng so u need good cooling system and good psu for that.

    goodluck though..
