Comedy films, whether romantic or geared for the whole family, proved to be the most profitable genre in the Philippine box-office. Most of the top-grossing films in 2008 were humorous flicks that were instant crowd-drawers.
Based on data gathered by PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal), four Star Cinema films entered the Top Five while one is a co-production from GMA Films and Regal Entertainment.
For the past few weeks, PEP has been trying to contact key persons who have information about the top Pinoy films in 2008. PEP opted to approach cinemas for the data since producers do not readily disclose the box-office figures.
It took about two months to complete this top list, which presents data culled from two malls that have branches nationwide: SM Cinema and Robinsons Movieworld. SM is the biggest cinema exhibitor in the Philippines with its 198 screens distributed in 32 branches nationwide. Robinsons has 13 branches, which translates to 83 screens.
According to a well-placed source in SM Cinema, the Top 5 blockbuster films of 2008 are 1) A Very Special Love, 2) For the First Time, 3) Caregiver, 4) My Bestfriend's Girlfriend, and 5) Ang Tanging Ina N'yong Lahat.
For Robinsons, the rankings of some films are switched but the movies stayed the same. 1) A Very Special Love, 2) For the First Time, 3) Ang Tanging Ina N'yong Lahat, 4) My Bestfriend's Girlfriend, and 5) Caregiver.
