The peso rallied to 49.455 against the US dollar on Tuesday as local and regional financial markets cheered the US government's bailout of American banking giant Citigroup.
The local currency gained a hefty P0.375 from Monday's closing of 49.83 versus the greenback, likewise supported by the influx of remittances from overseas Filipinos ahead of the Christmas season.
"The peso is stronger on remittance flows as well as weaker US dollar overnight," said Jonathan Ravelas, chief strategist at Banco de Oro Unibank.
Another dealer said the peso was boosted by upbeat stock market trading.
The trader said investors took heart from news of a massive $306-billion lifeline for Citigroup.
It was the largest banking bailout by the US government amid the continuing global financial crisis.
The peso, which threatened to break past the psychological 50:$1 barrier last week, closed near its intra-day high of 49.44 on Tuesday after hitting a low of 49.66 against the US dollar.
