The destination URL doesn't matter. What matters is the number of letters of the link itself. That is the point of shortening URLs. Simply having www. in front and using .com instead of a two letter TLD are more letters that don't need to be there. This may not seem very important, but for sites like twitter that have a limited number of characters allowed ... it is key. Also, maliit.net is not fixed with 13, every unique URL has an identifier such as
