The leopard gecko, (Eublepharis macularius), is an ideal pet that takes up little space, has simple food requirements, comes in designer colors and patterns and can withstand the life dealt out by even the most absent-minded of keepers.
They are excitable as babies, but harmless, and as adults they become very tame; taking food from your fingers. With a maximum adult size of 7-10" this lizard is easily handled by supervised children. But remember, their tails can breakoff (and be regrown), so make sure you never pick them up or grab them by that fleshy tail, so be very gentle with them.
Leopard Geckos are native to south-asian Afghanistan, throughout Pakistan, north-west India, and into Iran where it inhabits the rocky, dry grassland and desert regions of these countries. As nocturnal creatures, they spend the day hidden under rocks or in dry burrows to escape the daytime heat, emerging at dusk to hunt insects.
I have two Leopard Geckos, one juvenile male Snow Tremper (Naruto) and one juvenile female Tangerine Designers (Sakura)
They love to walk in my hands and in my bed. They don't like bright lights, put their enclosure in a corner with a dim light, so you can see them often outside their hide. Leopard Geckos are easy to maintain, i use tissue paper for the cage bottom. You can see when it is soiled and the cost is low. They will poo in one spot, so cleaning the enclosure is easy, just replace the soiled tissue paper. You should provide them also two hides, one dry and one wet (This aids in skin shedding, which they eat)
This is their temporary enclosure, I designed this enclosure for my scorpions but my two geckos love them, i will move them next year in a larger enclosure, when my another female gecko will arrive.
They always hang out outside the hide when its dark.
Feeding them is easy and cheap, they love superworms and crickets, I feed them everyday, for my two geckos they average 8 superworms. I will add dubia and lateralis next year in their menu. You should have a shallow water and calcium dish in the enclosure.
