    Hi bfg9000 thats very interesting, and great to know its locally developed. However, I am interested to know what you use to alter the pitch/tempo of the audio files in realtime without getting stutters, clicks or artifacts. With midi (like the hyundai players) its very easy to change the pitch of the song, however with audio files, it is a lot harder. The pro applications that do that in real time,(acid, ableton, reason, spectrasonics etc.) are even still limited in the degree of shifts compared to midi shifts.
    I get a lot of minus_1 requests from performing artists and I essentially do a minor recording production that includes live guitars, solo strings, wind instruments, depending on the song, so I know it is too expensive to have a custom minus_1 made, that means all those minus_1 in K1 etc., are basically GM synth playback converted to audio format, not much different from the synth midi M_1 you can get from the internet. That's like an ipod, 4gb per 1000 songs, 40gb per 10,000 songs, 80 gb per 20,000 songs, assunming minimum dvd quality (24bit 128kbps).

    Anyway thats still a very good system you developed there :mrgreen:

    Not really. The songs in K-1 or POD 5 are sourced from karaoke DVDs or VCDs, from recording companies like Universal, Star Records, etc. They feature real instruments, not MIDI, and also include background vocals, and a second audio track with full vocals (my software allows you to switch between tracks). In fact some of those songs (OPM mostly) feature the actual background music used by the original artist, and the second track includes the voice of the original performer.

    I am interested to know what you use to alter the pitch/tempo of the audio files in realtime without getting stutters, clicks or artifacts.
    It's usually handled by the karaoke amplifier, though my software can do it too (via DSP code), at the expense of additional CPU load though. So in most cases I let the karaoke amplifier handle it.

    @navs

    Sorry but the software I wrote for KTVs isn't suitable for personal or home use, as I designed it for multi-room KTVs, and priced it accordingly.

    Later this year though I will release a stand-alone version for resorts/hotels/function rooms/etc. It can also be used for high-end home setups.

    Interesting...what platform are you using to develop this software? so this basically is like having a streaming server ala VLC or Icecast?

    Default Network KTV

    Hello guys: In the early 2000, there was Sound Venture Karaoke Box in front of Asilo, along Gorordo Avenue. It was a network karaoke setup with the components from Japan (Pioneer, U-kara, Victor (JVC), etc.). There was a main computer terminal inside the machine room where all the LD and VCD players were located. In each guest room was a remote terminal called the Commander. They were linked to the machine room via co-ax cables and each commander was assigned a specific address. In the back of each commander was a DIP switch and if a particular commander was assigned to, let's say, room 5, the decimal 5 was converted to binary 00000101, so this will be the DIP switch setting for this commander, and so on. The Pioneer LD players were large machines which could hold 144 LDs, 72 on the left vertical stack and 72 on the right. There were two removable players inside each machine, one on top and one on the bottom. The machines were linked via communications cable which looked like a parallel port cable to the main computer. This computer contained the proprietary software which allows the operator to program the actual number of LDs in each machine, as well as input the number of songs for each individual LD. Programming it took about two days for the Japanese engineers who came here to set it up. They had with them sheets of paper that contained the part code of each LD that was to be placed inside the machines. It was hard work and during that time, I think it was the first setup here in Cebu or the Philippines for that matter, but it was old technology in Japan. Another machine was the U-kara, a self-contained computer which had a large capacity hard drive and two VCD bays on each side. The hard drive contained the songs while the VCDs contained the video. During operation everything was automatic. The computer does everything by communicating to each machine and the machine will, in turn, do its own operation of fetching the LD from its location and pushing it into the player, even queueing up another LD to the other player if there is a request for another song. Take note that each machine can do double duty, playing on both of its players inside, feeding to different rooms! The A/V signal from the machines were RF modulated by a bank of modulators to allow only one co-ax cable to feed each room. It was such a beauty to behold when all the machines were in operation. You hear all the noises that they make, their motors, trays, etc. Every sound was so mechanical and in synch. Songs that are being fed to every room can even be monitored from the computer terminal, even down to it's elapsed and remaining time. I still have the brochures for the system and the service manual for the Victor player. If anyone is interested to have a look, I can post scanned copies here but someone needs to ask so I won't be wasting time scanning and uploading when there is no interest about it. This was new to us during the time when the Japanese owner was already using fiber optics technology in his karaoke boxes in Japan. That's what he calls it, karaoke box.
