I believe that every Pope could and would reign without any of the riches that come with the regalia and pomp every time he makes an appearance in the world. He can still be pope without the rings and the extravagant clothing. I just wonder why most of us RCs still preach about charity when the Vatican doesn't seem to care at all about spending on all the finery just because the pope is visiting here and there. The pope is provided with a great security detail that rivals most state officials in the world. We still practice what we preach but the reality is even if it's a matter of faith, the propagation of one's religion is still dependent on money and political clout. It was a sad realization for me. It still is.

I'm an RC but it doesn't mean to say that I should be answerable to a pope who lives thousands of miles away. The least I can do is respect and keep to some of the choice traditions that come with being an RC. The pope is still human and I don't believe he's infallible. I still pray for every church leader (even non-Christians) so that they can be good and righteous shepherds and at least fight off the 'wolves' from time to time lest fanaticism clouds the judgment of us believers.

But still, the late Pope John Paul II was quite a character. I don't know how to explain it but he was really different and lived a more simple life (unless some one can tell me otherwise). In the end, it's all about the character of the reigning pope that helps us define and decide if he is worthy to be holy or not.
