I've been playing around with the idea for a long time as well and finally
decided to get my feet wet (pun intended)

turns out that high frequency radio waves can't penetrate water.
like someone said, "Besides Lead, Water is one of the best containments
for radiation, so using a radio trigger under water is like farting against the wind "

modern day subs use low frequency waves to penetrate deep for
radio communication... "the wave lengths are much bigger and wider thus
    allowing for more errors"

got some nice suggestions from other people... like drilling a hole in the
bottom of the container so that the cable can go out (putting it at the
bottom will give it a "diving bell" affect) and seal the hole with silicon or
whatever waterproofing putty. the cable can then go directly to the
camera... or plug into the radio trigger which can float on the surface
while the strobe is positioned in the depths.

guys do you use hygrometer? is this necesarry?

  6. #126
black kangaroo: yes, i use a hygrometer and yes it is necessary to measure the moisture of your drybox. too dry and it will cause the sealants of your camera to be brittle, too moist and it might cause fungus.

    thanks pnoize.
any other store that sells Hygrometer? didto ko SM wala naku kita. murag lisod ni sya pangitaon diri cebu..

a reliable brand would be lock'n'lock or biolock (shown above). prices range from PhP 150 ~ 200
depending on size and shape. throw in one flash/battery powered strobe with radio trigger.

take one handy saltwater fishpond... if you just happen to have one

tested the setup for leaks (should've done that before I placed the gear in) and if strobe triggers...

by jove it works!!! the top of the container was about an inch below the water surface.

but unfortunately when dropped to a lower depth...

...the light wouldn't trigger. guess the radio waves couldn't penetrate the water. weak batteries
maybe? I haven't changed the batteries after shooting a 3 day event. modify the radio set with
a more powerful antenna? an engineer I consulted suggested try one that's coiled. and what if it
was a more reliable radio trigger like pocketwizards?

at least I've already got a nice setup which can withstand splashes and accidental dunks. though
being able to light underwater was the main goal. any ideas? one thing I'm considering is to just
use a direct cable... but how would I have it coming out of the container without leaks?

well something to give our brains a good whirl
i tried underwater strobe setup a few months ago...i use dicapac as waterproof enclosure. rf tigger i used were hencel (german brand) and flashwave (korean brand) and cheap 2k rf trigger sets sold here
    here are my results.

all performed remarkably similar...although i failed to test each and every combination...

camera with trigger underwater...lights above the water...
i could only trigger the lights if i was 1 inch below the water after that it was very inconsistent. below 2 or 3 inches under the water it was impossible. only the 2k trigger became inconsistent at 1inch below the water.

both under the water... at best still inconsistent triggering on all 3 at distance several inches away from the trigger... it will only trigger when they are very very close to each other.

i think pocketwizard wouldnt be able to perform any better. why?
rf doesnt work well in water.
the deeper you go, the difference in temp, the salinity of water, etc. makes it just about impossible.
thats why submarines need to go up near the breach of the water and launch a floating buey (antenna) for communications. only very low frequency with very long loop antennas (enough for more code sort of communication) would work which are not being offered by any RF trigger manufacturer...i dont think its even legal for them to use those very low frequencies...

to seal the wires without leaking you can use those bathroom rubbery sealants the come out of a tube...it even comes with an application gun of sorts. silicon can also help.

i took some photos of some successful builts il try to find them tonight and post them here

the remote control can also be used underwater just seal it with a condom and rubberband hehe.
