THREE suspected car thieves were killed while a policeman was injured following a shootout in the Ortigas Center in Pasig City late Monday evening, reports said.
At around 10 p.m., police intercepted the suspects who were driving a red Nissan Sentra sedan at the corner of Garnet and Ortigas Jr. streets after receiving a tip from an informant.
The suspects however refused to yield and opened fire at the pursuing policemen, said Chief Superintendent Augusto Angcanan, Traffic Management Group (TMG) director.
“We had to use reasonable force to repel the aggressors. They fired at our policemen,” Angcanan said on GMA Network's “Unang Hirirt” newscast.
Two of the three slain suspects were identified based on their driver's licenses as Brian Anthony Dulay and Francis Javier Manzano, reports said.
Senior Inspector Samuel Belmonte was shot on the leg and was brought to the hospital for treatment, said Interior Secretary Angelo Reyes.
Police recently intensified their campaign against carjacking, which they admitted has been on the rise recently.
