Guys, what's better? a 128mb 128bit video card or a 256mb 64bit video card? both are of the same make.
Please help!

XMB - DDRZ this classifies the memory type and size, basically, X determines the memory size and Z determines the type. the higher these numbers are, the better the card is, considering all other factors equal. (video processor, clock speed, bus width).
Y-bit this specifies the bus width of the card's memory system. means, the memory processed is in Y-bit chunks. (64-bit, means memory is processed in 64-bit chunks) the bigger the bus width, the better the bandwidth.
in layman's term, the memory (XMB DDRZ) determines the speed/performance of the cars, and the bus width (Y-bit) determines the road width. both must have a balance, imagine 2GB of GDDR5 on a 32-bit bus. a bottleneck.
so, you can't really tell which is better given your options. specify memory type, VID processor, clock speed, and all else. might be a 256MB DDR and 64-bit or a 128GDDR3 and 128bit
hi, thanks for the quick reply. all i know is its a geforce 6200
the 128mb 128bit is ASUS while i'm not sure of the 256mb 64bit.
any way you can help further with this?
sorry, unless i would know the other, i can't jump into conclusions. there's no way to compare a video processor with a wildcard. cheers.
heres the simple math
Another example. From the table you may think GeForce 6600 GT is faster than a GeForce 6800 because it has a higher clock rate (500 MHz against 325 MHz). But GeForce 6800 accesses memory 256 bits at a time while GeForce 6600 GT accesses memory 128 bits at a time, and also GeForce 6800 processes 12 pixels per clock tick, while GeForce 6600 GT processes eight pixels per clock.
The right way to compare the memory performance of different chips is through their memory transfer rate, which is calculated using the formula (clock x bits per clock ) / 8.
my 2 cents.
it's like a water tank with smaller/bigger outlet.
water tank = vga RAM
faucet/outlet = bits
basing sa experience, better go with higher bit.
i had a 512mb 6600gt 128bit. my farcry/fear game runs SO slow.
my other computer had 256mb 6600gt 256bit. farcry/fear runs a LOT better.
high videocard MB is only useful if you plan to play on higher resolution without affecting performance.
so its like this.
1.)
128bit, 64bit
play any game - say counter strike
choose your resolution, say 800x600
and it runs ok.
choose higher resolution say 1280x1024
and it's now chappy, so if you want to play AT THE SAME SPEED you had with 800x600resolution, choose a card with higher ram so it work affect the current performance.
so choose 256mb with 64bit.
2.)
128mb,64bit
play any game - say counter strike
choose your resolution, say 800x600
it's slow, it's chappy.
go for 128mb with 128bit!
choose higher resolution say 1280x1024
and it's now chappy, so if you want to play AT THE SAME SPEED you had with 800x600resolution, choose a card with higher ram so it work affect the current performance.
so choose 256mb with 128bit.
Dont want to upgrade? reduce details/reduce object fade distance.
go for higher bits. it's much safer that way. mahal ra.
im currently looking for new videocard. either go for 1gig video hard or 512mb videocards.
Im interested in new generation video games, like farcry2/crysis/fallout3/gta4.
after researching, this is what i came up with:
Gameplay Resolutions
- 1680x1050
- 1920x1200
- 2560x1600
recommendation - stay away from 512mb video cards.
Gameplay Resolution
- 1280x1024 and below
recommendation - higher than 512mb is a waste of money.

+1 karma to Jiro, very well explained.
most people would look at the size of the vram to determine its speed but this is what you need to look into (usually):
- stream processors
- memory bandwidth
- memory size (depende sa imong screen resolution)
thanks for the insights guys!
what are your thoughts on the Radeon X1650 Pro AGP 512mb 128bit VC? looking all around for an AGP VC to upgrade from my FX 5500 256mb 128bit
