Wow! I like this one... I hope I can try this too... hope you can contact me about this when the beta release...
I have never recalled myself saying I was an expert in anything and I doubt BeoR has either.
The fact is, if you knew the difference between your ass and a hole in the ground, it is STUPID to re-invent the wheel. The Wordpress codebase has been tried and tested. The only pieces of software out there that can rival Wordpress in extensibility, performance and every other aspect we are looking for are all closed source enterprise pieces of software. Why would we even want to create something from scratch when it is already done for us? Why would we want to deal with the development, the bugs and all the trouble that software development brings? Have you even developed software? Do you realize that there are only two admins at iSTORYA that can work on development ... BeoR and I. Do you realize that we both have other full time jobs to occupy us? We do not and cannot make a living from iSTORYA. Sure, if we are like you, living off our parents, we could spend all our time on iSTORYA. We could be stupid and start re-inventing the wheel so we can toot our own horns that we've created something buggy and unusable by anyone because we do not have resources or time that two people even working full time on software could bring. Develop software ... then come back to me and tell me how to code. Until you can show me code on how things should be done, we are better off with the solid codebase of Wordpress like many other people have done and we can extend it to our own needs. Welcome to open souce, if you don't like it, show yourself out. Make a living from the industry, then show us how things should be done. Show me the code.
Oh and for vBulletin ... there are only a handful of sites that actually use and develop their own forum software ... namely GameFAQS and IGN. Look at every other huge board out there ... almost all based on already existing software forums. Yet, for all their "custom" coding, none of them offer the features of forums developed by dedicated teams at phpBB, vB, SMF or Invision. Yes we could half ass the development of forum software that we could use the whole iSTORYA community as beta testers... or we can let the expert do what they do best.
