"The Little Prince" by Antoine de Saint-Exupery

@soulshocked: the story in itself is very significant. it was discussed in our philosophy classes. all the planets visited by the little prince signifies our attitude in life. and the things that we (adults) do, think (sometimes we think that what we're doing is very essential when in fact, it's not). The fox has a very deep meaning.. Taming the fox meant learning to love.. it involved separation, it involved the desire to love and be loved.. When the prince tamed the fox, he now understood the uniqueness of his rose (his love). The lamplighter signifies our introjects (the shoulds that we do), sometimes we do things over and over again without really knowing why we do it. waaaaaaaa.. basta daghan pa.. you can really get a lot from this book, actually.
it's actually seeing the world with the eyes of a child.

i found humor in this story also.. for example:

"I am beginning to understand", said the little prince. "There is a flower... I think that she has tamed me..."

"It is possible", said the fox. "On the Earth one sees all sorts of things."

"Oh, but this is not the Earth!" said the little prince. The fox seemed perplexed, and very curious.

"On another planet?"

"Yes".

"Are there hunters on that planet?"

"No."

"Ah, that is interesting! Are there chickens?"

"No."

"Nothing is perfect", sighed the fox.

the fox said.. "Please-- tame me!!" he said. (in our language, PLEASE LOVE ME!!)

"I want to, very much," said the little prince. "But I have not much time. I have friends to discover, and a great many things to understand".

"One only understands the things that one tames. Men have no more time to understand anything. They buy things all ready made at the shops. But there is no shop anywhere where one can buy friendship, and so men have no friends any more. If you want a friend, tame me.. ", replied the fox.

For a kid's book, it's a very very very interesting read.

I first read it about 6 years ago when I was still in first year HS. Then naay ni borrow, ambut kinsa, then wa na gi uli. So mga a few months ago ni palit ko ug balik then gi kabuangan ug basa sa akong mga classmate. nalingaw sad sila.

It's a very good read. It's one of thos few books that are worth reading twice.

Mahal lang if you think about it. You spend about P180 for something that you read in 2 hours. But if you think about it, again, priceless siya kay naa jud kay ma-learn and you can lend it to other people for books that you can't afford hehehehehehe. ^_^

On chapter XXI

Actually, the prince has learned these lessons on his own, but the fox spells them out for him and makes clear where the prince’s future lies. By calling his lessons a “secret,� the fox reveals that such knowledge is not available to all. The fox’s lessons must be learned, and, in some way, they should be considered a privilege.

On chapter XXIV

In most fables and fairy tales, the story’s moral is given at the very end of the work. In The Little Prince, by contrast, Saint-Exupéry delivers his lesson early on so that the narrator, and us with him, can experience it for himself. In Saint-Exupéry’s hands, a moral serves no purpose if it is not fully explored and lived out, and that is exactly what he does here. We think we have understood the full meaning of the fox’s secret after the encounter between the fox and the little prince, but the narrator repeats the process of understanding once again, showing us that even when we think we understand something, there is always more to learn.

PARADOX. The first time I read this book 8 years ago, I was a little perplexed about the supposed "message between the lines." I found it interesting, and when I began to realize the messages after a few "re-reads", it became my all time favorite book.

It is dressed up in innocence, yet when you try to wake urself up and wipe off that drool and try to understand the lines better, you'd see a different kind of wisdom that runs deeper than the simple words Antoine de Saint Exupery used. I believe that it is also written for us to see the world like how a child views it. He's right, children have to explain everything to adults...we have grown up and adopted the complications of life. Sometimes, it's good to lay back and look at life like how you saw it 20 years ago (or so, hehe).

"It is only through the heart that one can see rightly. What is essential is invisible to the eye" ---clap clap clap!

i have just finished the book last night. it's a pretty sad story. kahilak ko.Â*

when we fall in love with one another, are we taming each other? the book really makes u think. i believe it's not only about having a child-like view of the world, it's also about love.
