Collegiate Champions League update

Based on results of games in the various “mother leagues,” the following shows the ranking of top teams in Luzon: Region 1 (Ilocos / Baguio) -University of Northern Philippines (SCUAA Champion), St. Louis University and University of Cordillera; Region 2 (Pangasinan / Tarlac / Pampanga) – Lyceum of Subic Bay (UCLAA Champion), University of Luzon Golden Tigers and Lyceum Northwestern University Dukes; and Region 3 (Quezon / Bicol) – University of Nueva Caceres Greyhounds, M. S. Enverga University (QPSBA Champion) and Computer Communication Development Institute.

In the Visayas, the following are the top teams: Cebu – University of Visayas Green Lancers, University of San Jose Recoletos Jaguars and University of San Carlos Warriors; Region 4 (Iloilo / Bacolod) – Western Institute Technology, John B. Lacson Maritime University Dolphins and West Negros University Mustangs; Region 5 (Dumaguete / Bohol) – BIT International College Cruisers, Holy Name University Falcons and Siliman University Stallions; and Region 6 (Tacloban / Ormoc / Samar) - Western Leyte College Mustangs, AMA Computers Titans and Leyte College Cougars.

In Mindanao, the top teams are: Region 7 (Cagayan de Oro / Misamis Oriental) – Xavier University Crusaders, Capitol University Stallions and Cagayan de Oro College Scorpions; Region 8 (Davao / Socsargen) – Agro Industrial College Sailors, EMAR College Red Horse, and University of Mindanao Mustangs; and Region 9 (Zamboanga / Misamis Occidental) - Immaculate Concepcion School Phoenix, Kabansalan Institute Technology and Ateneo de Zamboanga Blue Eagles.

SSC-Cavite forces game 3 in NAASCU
San Sebastian College Recoletos-Cavite dismantled defending champion STI College, 95-75, to force a knockout match for the 8th NAASCU basketball championship at the Makati Coliseum.

The Baycats leaned on the efforts of center Kris Lucernas and guard Ray Alcasabas to recover from a 75-72 loss in Game 1 last Tuesday.

Lucernas made a game-high 24 points while the Alcasabas nailed 21 markers as SSCR-C extended the series to a deciding Game 3 which will be held tomorrow, also at the Makati Coliseum.

A 16-2 run before halftime gave the Baycats a 51-42 lead as Alcasabas hit a buzzer-beating shot to end the half. He and Lucernas combined for 12 points during the said spurt.

Two treys by Lucernas and a triple by PJ Escobal extended San Sebastian’s lead to 15 points, 62-47, with 4:55 as the Olympians struggled in the second half.

Daryl Mendoza and Jay Aransazo paced STI with 20 points apiece while PBL veteran Ramon Mabayo was held to just 13 points.

The Olympians actually scored the last eight points, six coming from Mabayo, to take a 23-20 first quarter edge that saw SSCR-C head coach Egay Macaraya and STI mentor Vic Ycasiano being assessed with a technical foul each after engaging in a verbal exchange following a play.

Meanwhile, Lyceum of Subic Bay captured third place with an 89-88 win over St Clare College of Caloocan as JC Colliado and LA Gapasin tallied 16 points apiece to give the Sharks a surprising finish in just their first season with the league.

Three-time Fr. Martin Cup champion Arellano U showed its readiness to join the NCAA as it stunned 2006 UAAP champion Santo Tomas, 69-59, yesterday to barge into the “Sweet 16” of the 2008 Philippine Collegiate Champions League at the Makati Coliseum.

Orlando Daroya, priming up for his PBL debut for Pharex tomorrow, dished out a double-double performance of 32 points and 10 rebounds while coming up with five steals to power the Chiefs to the big win and a clash with UCAA champion Universal College of Nursing in the main draw.

“I guess teams will start to take notice of us now,” said Arellano coach Leo Isaac, who made a record of sort after he became the first mentor to steer two teams in the Sweet 16 after leading Mapua into the tournament proper the other day.

University of the East and Lyceum likewise advanced to the next phase by routing St. Clare, 108-80, and University of Nueva Caceres-Naga City, 81-60, respectively.

The Warriors arranged a showdown with the 6-9 George Slaughter-led Cebu champion University of Visayas while the Pirates will meet reigning UAAP titlist Ateneo.

The Chiefs, also the back-to-back NCRAA champions bidding to take Phil. Christian U’s slot in the NCAA next season, dominated the Tigers as they led from start to finish to boot out the fancied España-based squad, which missed the services of injured Jervy Cruz and Japs Cuan.

Arellano employed a man-to-man full-court trapping defense to scuttle UST and sustained aggressive offensive game throughout the contest.

Dylan Ababou, a PBL star playing for Magnolia Purewater, scored 22 points for UST.

The tournament is staking P500,000, P200,000 and P150,000 for the first to third placers in scholarship grants, courtesy of Smart, PLDT, KFC, Flying V, Fil-Oil and The STAR and another P500,000, P200,000 and P150,000 in cash courtesy of telecommunication boss Manny V. Pangilinan.

USJ-R, UC win, assured of semis slot in PCCL Zonals



THE University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) and University of Cebu (UC) started strong as they won their respective matches in the Philippine Collegiate Champions League Zone 3 championships yesterday in Ormoc City.

The USJ-R Jaguars fulfilled their promise to get back at Bacolod City’s West Negros University, which bashed them in the University Games two weeks ago, with an 88-77 victory in the competition’s opening game Sunday night.

Yesterday morning, the UC Webmasters made short work of AMA-Ormoc, 101-60.

Although the two teams still need to battle two other teams each, they are already assured of slots to the crossover semifinals.

USJ-R was playing Bohol Institute of Technology, while UC was going against Letran at press time.

The USJ-R Jaguars vowed to avenge their University Games loss to WNU. At the University Games, the Jaguars enjoyed a strong start, before WNU ended their hopes for a medal.

Last Sunday, they wasted no time and made their commanding presence felt early in the game. Jabe Delfino, who led the scoring rampage for USJ-R with 17 points, said they were able to take control right from the tip off up until finish.

“We led all the way and managed to build a 23-point lead. We led by 12 points at halftime. Unlike in Dumaguete, we were the stronger team this time,” said Delfino, who came into the game confident of their chances since they now have big men Kurt Amores and Manny Gabas. The two were absent in the University Games.

Delfino asserted his leadership on the floor but also received ample help from the rest of the Jaguars, which had six players scoring in double digits. Jan Malinao and Luther Justiniani scattered 14 points each, while Armand Ponce had 13. Amores and Gabas added12 points each.

Meanwhile, UC Web–masters’ head coach Rhoel Gomez was able to field in his second stringers after finding themselves on the good side of a mismatched game.

Kim Gomez led the scoring for UC with 22 points, while Laurence Agas added 13 and Rommel Luceño added 12. Kevin Quilantang and Jansen Abella scored 11 each.

Only two teams in Zone 3 will get slots to the quarterfinals of the PCCL.

University of the Visayas is already assured of a slot to the PCCL for winning the Cesafi title. (MCB)
