Here are the answers of your queries:
.) Alligator gars can live up to 80+ years. But in captivity, it is rare for a gator gar to achieve its ideal lifespan due to lack of natural needs that can be found only in the wild.
.) Gator gars are known to be the 2nd largest freshwater fish in the world (next only to the giant arapaima). With their size, you need to have a bigger space (either aquarium tank or well filtrated pond) to keep this specie (granting if you want to keep this fish for good)
.) Although gator gars are known to surface for air and need no ample supply of oxygen, it is ideal to come up with a good biological filtration to combat the acidic level of protein waste in the enclosure. In this manner, you’re not just making the water crystal clear but also help maintain the condition of the fish from stress and diseases. Thus, having a good filtration process would lessen the keeper’s strenuous job of changing the water every now and then.
.) Gator gars are known to prey on live fishes (anything that fits into their mouth). In National Geographic, in an exclusive rare footage, gator gars are even feeding on small alligators. Such display of predatory skill would make this one a good exotic fish in the hobbyist’s dream lists.
.) Yes, especially if hungry. So I wouldn’t take chances to dip my finger in the water to a hungry gator gar. Hehehe but if they’re fed properly, gator gars are known to be very passive. In the wild however, in rare cases, alligator gars are known to attack human.
