Six teams join Liga’s 2nd season
    Wednesday, November 05, 2008

TEAMS that are looking forward to give powerhouse M. Lhuillier-Cebu Niños a run for their money have one more month to prepare as the 2008 Liga Pilipinas Second Conference moved its opening date to Dec. 10.

Aside from the 13 other teams that are likely to return to the league to challenge the Cebuano squad, six new teams will be out to confront Cebu.

Only six of the 19 interested applicants were given the nod by the league officials to join the next season.

“The league’s second conference is scheduled to start on Dec. 10. The number of teams will be determined this week,” Liga Pilipinas head of operations Butch Antonio told Sun.Star Cebu.

Antonio disclosed that the league is eyeing to increase the number of teams to 20.

This will however, still go through a lot of planning and discussions and the viability of the locations of the LGU-based teams.

This will be discusses further during the team owner and manager’s two-day workshop will be held next weekend.

As of the moment, the teams assured of slots to the next season are the Davao City-based Montaña Pawnshop from the south and the teams from San Juan City and Manila.

Meanwhile, there will be a pre-season tournament slated on Nov. 12-16 here in Cebu

    M. Lhuillier gets Fil-Am
    Wednesday, December 10, 2008

A FILIPINO-American from Florida, USA is the latest addition to the powerhouse roster of reigning Liga ng Pilipinas First Conference champions M. Lhuillier Cebu Ninos basketball squad.

Roderick “Derick” Montano, a run-and-gun artist from an elite Fil-Am team in Orlando was named by head coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba as the 15th member of the M. Lhuillier franchise that prepares to defend its title next month at the Liga ng Pilipinas Second Conference.

Montano led Florida’s Fil-Am squad to a runner-up finish at the prestigious North American Basketball Association (NABA) Inter-Cities Championships in Detroit, Michigan where he averaged 24 points per game. The tournament was won by Team Detroit led by former Barangay Ginebra power forward Rudy Hatfield.

    Experience

In Orlando, Montano is the starting shooting guard of the Legacy Medical Vipers, one of Florida’s most powerful Fil-Am teams at the Filipino Basketball League of Orlando (FBL) where he averages 25 points, 12 rebounds per game.

“Derick is a promising addition to the Ninos,” Alcoseba said. “He has the talent and the speed. He can shoot and he can jump.”

Montano was earlier named by the Florida Sports Development Institute (FSDI) as one of the Top Five Filipino-American cagers in the state of Florida along with John Arigo of Coca Cola, Rob Reyes of Talk & Text, Mike Dizon of Bacchus; and Adrian Sosa of Emory University (NCAA), Atlanta, Georgia.

    Introduction

Prior to his arrival in Cebu City, the Cebu-born player had lived and worked in Orlando, Florida.

He was introduced to the M. Lhuillier franchise by his previous team manager Balt Quinain Jr., chief executive officer of Legacy Medical Center in Orlando. Quinain and M. Lhuillier vice-president Michael Lhuillier were classmates at UP High.

Montano will join a squad oozing with PBA experience that include: Marlon Basco, Bruce Dacia, Stephen Padilla, Ron Capati, skipper Danny Aying and Hercules Tangkay.

The rest of the Lhuillier squad include: Woodrow Enriquez, Mark Ababon, Rino Berami, Ariel Mepaña, Ronaldo Bucao, Jerry Cavan, Richard Ian Saladaga and Jayford Rodriguez. (PR)
