Default ACE ( facts on philippine aquatic life) file snakes

    Hello ACERS,

This post is in relation to Allister's curiosity on one of the snakes that are being sold at manalili. The snake that he was refering to is one of the three File snake species which is the Acrochordus granulatus that has a common name of little or banded file snake. I first came across this snake at the Aquarium World Center which was mislabelled as striped eel. Some people call these snakes as Wart or Elephant trunk snake. The vendors in manalili are soaking these snakes in methylene blue to temporarily color the white bands on the snake, the white bands will however, fade as the snake reach maturity.

    COMMON NAME:
Little file snake and Banded file snake

    SCIENTIFIC NAME:
    Acrochordus granulatus

    MANALILI NAME:
    Water eel and Water snake

    LOCAL NAME:
    Sometimes called a Tangkig.

    DISTRIBUTION:
    The Philippines, Singapore and Indonesia.

    SIZE:
    1.6 meters in length

    DIET:
Mainly fish and other aquatic animals and in captivity, may also feed on frogs.

    NOTE:
File snakes are mainly aquatic and are not fast swimming. They have a very slow movement on land. File snakes are non venomous and they rarely bite.

Below are some information of the other two file snake species.

    COMMON NAME:
    Arafura file snake

    SCIENTIFIC NAME:
    Acrochordus arafurae

    DISTRIBUTION:
    Australia and New Guinea

    SIZE:
average lenght of 1.5 meters and a maximum length of 2.5 meters.

    DIET:
Mainly fish and other aquatic animals.

    COMMON NAME:
    Javan file snake

    SCIENTIFIC NAME:
    Acrochordus javanicus

    DISTRIBUTION:
Originated in India, now present in Indo-Australian islands as far as the Solomons.

    SIZE:
Maximum length for males is 5 feet while females reaches a maximum lenght of 8 feet.

    DIET:
Mainly fish and other aquatic animals.
