It really depends on what you like. Both are in demands and will always be in the future. If you like logic, system programming more then software development is for you. If you're more into business programming ( sales/web programming etc..) then I guess web development is for you.

    Strongly Disagree!

what do you exactly mean by migrating systems into web? even an ERP system runs only about 35% of its web frontend and backend but on top of the architecture is running under specific system that doesn't involve tiny part on WEB. There's a lot of disadvantage and RISK! when porting such system into WEB. Possible that they will extend their system into WEB capabilities like adding some remote site activity but not to the extend that they will replace their existing software after investing some $$$ and time?

If you work in an outsourcing firm
    you don't have a choice.
    There's no "or" just "and"
    soft and web
If there is no web project.
Then a web dev is useless.

Mas exciting ang hybrid software development and web development (web dev is a subset of software development anyway, but we'll assume that they're separate categories for the sake of our discussion hehe). You can do software development on the back-end side and web on the front-end side. I'm currently doing that, and I find it cool because it broadens my horizons...

you can do both in web (front/back end).

    Sa business application side.

Mas maayo ang software dev. you know why? Once ma suheto kana sa application(main core/back bone ), apil ang communications programming, dali na lang na web dev. kay kahibaw na man kag asa mag sikot2x.

    - In business mas importanti gud ang backbone/back-end, mao nay kinabuhi.
