Niņos surprise Red Bull
THE unsuspecting Red Bull Barakos became an addition to the list of victims of the M. Lhuillier-Cebu Niņos as the PBA squad succumbed to an 89-87 defeat to the multi-titled commercial squad during the friendly game held at the Cebu Coliseum last night.
The fearless Richard Ian Saladaga scored all of his 13 points in the second half including a conventional three point play in the final 14.8 seconds of the game that gave the Niņos the win.
Saladaga also pulled the crucial rebound after Magnum Membrere missed a triple that could have given the Barakos the win.
The former USJ-R Jaguar was also a vital part when the Niņos did the full court trap that resulted to an 11-0 run.
Red Bull, winner of three PBA titles, had an 11-point lead for the first six minutes and was also ahead at 85-74 after Al Magpayo scored a jumper at the 3:40 mark.
Cebu coach Yayoy Alcoseba then called a time out to map out the final defensive stance that tied the game at 85-all with 2:03 left in the game.
Magpayo gave Red Bull its last taste of the lead with two free throws 20 seconds later.
After both squads missed their attempts, Saladaga fearlessly challenged three Barakos on a fastbreak play and got a foul and a conversion for an 88-87 Cebu lead.
Coach Yeng Guiao, who had not called a single time out, was forced to call back-to-back time outs to map out his final strategy.
However, Magpayo missed the attempt at the three- point play and Cebu skipper Danny Aying grabbed the defensive board and got fouled by Nat Cruz to stop the clock.
Aying split his charities and Guiao called his final time out with 5.8 seconds to no avail.

M. Lhuillier stuns PBA’s Red Bull
By Emmanuel B. Villaruel
Saturday, September 27, 2008
The big-hearted M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Niņos rattled Red Bull of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) with their leech-like trapping defense underneath the final three-minute mark of the contest, rallying from 12 points down to stun the Barakos, 89-87, in their well-attended exhibition match last night at the Cebu Coliseum.
Staring imminent defeat with a 74-85 deficit with a little over three minutes left to play, Niņos head coach Raul “Yayoy” D. Alcoseba wisely shuffled his cards by checking in a smaller five-man crew of Stephen Padilla,Woodrow Enriquez, Richard Ian Saladaga, Bruce Dacia, and Danny Aying.
Alcoseba’s gambit paid off as it forced the baffled Red Bull to a spare of errors, enabling the Niņos to counter with an 11-to-nothing attack for an 85-all deadlock with 2:03 to go in the game.
Alvin Magpayo ended Red Bull’s two-minute scoring drought with two free throws to regain a 87-85 lead. In the ensuing sequence, Saladaga missed a short jumper, but Magpayo failed to ice the match for the Barakos as he flubbed his attempt with 14 seconds remaining.
After grabbing the defensive rebound, the Niņos dashed for a fastbreak play that was completed by Saladaga with a tough layup aside from fishing out a foul. He completed the three-point play to push M. Lhuillier in front, 88-87, 14 ticks left before the final buzzer.
In their possession, Magpayo again muffed a wide open shot, thus, boosting further the Niņos’ great escape. In an effort to save time, Nat Cruz fouled Danny Aying, whose first shot rolled in and out of the rim but made his second for a shaky M. Lhuillier 89-87 edge with only 5.8 seconds left in the contest.
That forced Red Bull coach Yeng Guiago to call for two straight timeouts. Those were the only instance Guago sued for a one-minute break the entire game.
But that did not do any good for his team because for the third time, Red Bull blew its chance to avoid an embarrassing defeat as Magnum Membrere was way off his target from the left corner. Saladaga picked up the ball with two seconds to go and then passed it off to Mark Jonas Ababon as the gameclock expired, prompting the entire M. Lhuillier bench and their legion of loyal disciples to float in cloud nine.
“I applied full court press and fortunately it worked. They commited a lot of errors because they we’re surprised by it. There was the element of surprise,” said a visibly ecstatic Alcoseba, who walked out of the Coliseum grinning ear-to-ear and with his sparkling. “Our victory shows what kind of team Cebu Niņos are made of. And so long as the Sto. Niņo is behind us, it is very difficult to beat us.”
With their breath-taking Red Bull conquest, M. Lhuillier somehow erased the sting of its previous setback to Brgy. Ginebra wherein a Rafi Reavis buzzer-beater robbed the Niņos of a win over the Gin Kings, 90-92, in February of this year.
Overall, the Southern Philippines ’ legendary ballclub now has a 2-3 win-loss card in the last three years against professional teams. In August of 2006, the Niņos whipped the Santa Lucia Realtors, 82-69, but lost successive games to San Miguel Beermen, 91-97, and Talk ‘N Text Phone Pals, 97-101.
Padilla topped the Niņos of sports patron Michel J. Lhuillier with 24 points spiked with a rare-point play in a 10-0 spurt that gave M. Lhuillier their biggest lead at nine points, 54-45. Red Bull easily erased the deficit and even took a dozen-point advantage, 81-69, before folding up in the face to Cebu’s stifling pressure defense.
Padilla was backed up by Saladaga with 13 points, while Aying and Dacia pitched in 11 points apiece. More than the win, it was a timely birthday gift for Dacia, who will turn a year older today. Carlo Sharma paced Red Bull with 14 points followed by Jojo Duncil with 13 markers.

The M. Lhuillier-Cebu Niņos continued its winning streak, this time shocking one of the Philippine Basketball Association’s (PBA) finest.
The Niņos, fresh from a championship finish in the maiden season of the Liga Pilipinas, escaped PBA powerhouse Red Bull Barakos with an 89-87 squeaker in yesterday’s friendly encounter at the Cebu Coliseum.
Ian Saladaga played the hero’s role for the Niņos as he scored all of his 13 points in the second half and completed a crucial three-point play with 14.8 ticks left in the game.
He capped off his sterling performance with a rebound off a miss by Magnum Membrere from beyond the arc in the game’s final play.
Ex pro Stephen Padilla led the Niņos with 24 points while Danny Aying and Bruce Dacia added 11 each.
Red Bull, which is preparing for the upcoming PBA season set to start on Oct. 4, is currently testing its new roster after letting go of key players during the off season and acquiring new ones from trades, the Rookie Draft and the free-agent pool.
The Barakos played without released players Mick Pennisi, Topex Robinson, Paolo Bugia, Mark Andaya and Kiko Adriano and tested new recruits Gabby Espinas, Paolo Hubalde, Jeff Chan, Larry Rodriguez and Al Magpayo.
The holdovers from the 2007-08 Red Bull squad that finished third in the import-laced 2008 Fiesta Cup are Cyrus Baguio, Warren Ybanez, Jojo Duncil, Leo Najorda, Mike Hrabak, Carlo Sharma, Magnum Membrere, Rich Alvarez and Celino Cruz.
12 players scored for the Barakos with Sharma leading the way with 14 markers.
The result of the game came as quite a surprise especially since the Barakos were coming off big win against Coca-Cola in the PBA pre-season tournament.
