I think one very important key factor one should have to become a real developer is concept and originality of code. I think this separates real web developer from the rest. Someone who develops using whatever technique implementation he wants from his own concept and how he wants to relay that concept.

Originality of the code is also important, though Im not saying using CMS is bad but anyone can develop a site using any CMS, but if you really want to become a developer, try to develop a site using your own code from scratch. Technical Skills can be learned, but conceptualizing is a different thing, starting from scratch and building your own logic and program design.

If you have tried building a site using your own concept and your own code then you can consider yourself a web developer.

True to the fact that anybody can make websites these days. To add a few points regarding this discussion, I Often times I get remarks like "why re-invent the wheel... open-source is the next big thing"...

Yeah sure open-source are great. It really helps developers make a quick buck. A quick buck... nothing more. Unless of course, your client is a real douche bag that knows nothing about the internet.

If you want something more than monetary contentment (let's say you want to stand out from the rest of the herd), find projects that you find really challenging. These projects will mold you to become a better developer. And to make it really more challenging, do it from scratch. err.. just make sure you have your exit strategy all figured out, in case you run out of time... hehehe

Thank you bros Rhee and flashfreak, I'm in the middle of learning, step by step I hope I could manage all these things. Do you have examples of websites where I can practice with.
