Liga’s best
THE M. Lhuillier-Cebu Niños got the first Liga Pilipinas Championship after sweeping the best-of-5 championship series against Harbour Centre-Taguig Batang Global last night in Taguig City.
Cebu made no mistake as they dominated the game from the very start to pull a 107-91 win in Game 3 to be the first champion of the three-month old league.
Stephen Padilla presided the early blitz of the Cebuanos as he sank two triples as the Niños took a 25-17 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
Young guns Jayford Rodriguez and Gerry Cavan then gave Cebu a double-digit lead sinking free throw shots as Taguig struggled with from the line shooting 11-of-30.
“This is history, that’s why the boys are really inspired. This win is not for the company and for the players alone but we owe (this win) to the Cebuano fans and our patron saint, Señor Sto. Niño. That is why we are called the Niños to honor the Holy Child,” Cebu head coach Yayoy Alcoseba told Sun.Star Cebu.
With Cebu leading 40-31 at the half, Taguig tried to use the zone defense that momentarily stalled the offense of the Cebuanos.
“But we were able to make the necessary adjustments and our outside shooting found their marks near the end game,” said, Alcoseba, who also credited their defense for the win.
“It was our pressure defense that carried us through this championship. And the boys played a very inspired ball game. From start to finish we gave our all because we committed for this win,” he said.
Aside from the handsome monetary windfall from team owner Michel Lhuillier, the Niños also did not want to stay longer in Taguig.
Alcoseba reported Wednesday evening that the players were not comfortable at the Cantada Sports Complex in Bagumbayan were they were billeted.
