Your Ipod, Iphone, psp, playstation, car, these things are just the byproducts (like radio active wastes are the byproducts of nuclear plants since its main product is electricity) of the humans quest for knowledge, like Einstein who studied so hard so that he/we will know more about God (unfortunately, one of the byproducts of their works are the atom bombs). We seek knowledge because we want to answer man's ultimate questions about life and death or about ultimate joy and happiness. The science that we know cannot provide us these answers. Well, it does bring "comfort and convenience" (not to be confused with happiness and contentment) to do those wo are "previleged and can afford". But not to the majority who are poor and marginalized.
Well, if one can make a poor man happy and be contented with his life by giving him a lecture on quantum theory, then that would be a good indication that science (the one that we knew since elementary school) is really the jack of all trades.

    Consolation: Relief, support, comfort, solace...

Interesting question. As for me, there are hundreds of answers I can think of. I just have to give you few. Science has brought us 3 basic needs... food, clothing and shelter. Science gave us education on different areas of study. Science has brought you in this world from you mother's womb. Science can cure your sickness. Science can support people from being disabled. The bed you're sleeping... the car you drive to and from... the things that your "magic box" (tv) gives you information. As of right now, you find solace by reading the posts in Istorya.net. Need I say more?

If the definition of consolation is about spirituality, then you can't find that in science. However, the question is a broad perspective. Let's not content that science CANNOT give something to your needs even if they are products made by man/woman they still have something to offer. Even poor can find comfort with little things that science has made. It's the same stature if you ask a person, "what consolation can you find in religion?" Both have different areas but we don't need to stop and look one side of the picture that religion is the only place for... and science is the only place for... That's one of the reasons why people need to rationalize.

    All is well, God Bless.

consolation, comfort and convenience are synonymous terms and I think this is what science can offer to the minority who can afford. I guess asking for consolation is just the wrong question.

I don't think the people who can't afford "has" a need to find comfort in religion "only", I mean there are things they still need... like, work. Though, you may be right, it just the wrong question.

People do not need to find comfort in religion. On the contrary, most religions teach us about self-sacrifice. Take up your own cross and carry its weight until you die. What religion is giving to the poor and the oppressed are hope, inspiration, courage etc., things that money can't buy. Afterall, the best things in the world are free. What technology is giving to the poor people is to droll over other rich people's gadgets, cars, tv, computer, etc., things that they can buy only if they will win the lottery.

Well said bro and as long as science remain in that position, religion will always remain in the future history of mankind.

Religion will always do better in selling "peace of mind".

Well, I do enjoy technology. But I find no comfort on it when I ponder about life and death.
