    Default Port 25/SMTP problem

    Hi Guys,

    admins:
First of all, I dont know where exactly should I post this so feel free to transfer it. Im sorry if I made a mistake.

Anyway, my problem is that I need to block port 25 in my Windows 2000 pro machine. I used that PC as a router using Wingate 5 to share internet to 5 PCs. The problem is that there's a netsky virus in one of my machines and now my static IP is blacklisted in spamhaus.org. I already scanned those machines using Norton AV and the virus was removed but I know that another sort of attack will come later especially that I'm planning to host my website in that proxy machine. The spamhaus.org site have suggested to block port 25 which is a good idea so that these pesky worms will not use it.

When port scanning on my own IP, I wonder why port 25 is open when I dont have any SMTP service/server installed. My MS Outlook programs are configured to use the SMTP server of my ISP. I'm using the DNS of my ISP too. I dont have any hardware firewall just the free Outpost firewall 1.0 which I believe works better than MS Firewall. I suspect that my Wingate is having it's own SMTP and this virus is using it. I already disabled the Wingate support for port 25. Workstations port 25 are closed according to my port scanning program.

I also scan my machines using spybot and adaware regularly.

So pls help me block port 25 using any software, thru Wingate settings or whatever way. I can't afford to buy a firewall now.

    Thanks in advance!

i have tried sygate, kerio & zonealarm but i found outpost much better. i saw the comparison from outpost website before.

in case you'll find some software that will block port 25, pls post it here.

    thanks for your suggestions!

I used that two softwares (sygate & outpost) before and that was also a trial version. I know also that they have some different features and outpost pro is better than sygate (my opinion too). But in your case, i think the personal firewall that fits on your set-up is try using sygate. It has access filtering by port no. outbound/inbound. Just go check deeper bro... I know that there is a access filtering there I forgot that cozĀ* i uninstall that software... or try the blackice bro. its also nice...

    JT,

blackice bro is not free but I've heard na it's a very good tool.
with sygate, naa bitaw siya port blocking w/c is very good but what i dont like kay daghan kaau cg pop-up if naay incoming or outgoing w/c is annoying. that's the reason why i stopped using zone alarm. but of course once ma set na ang rule for that program nga mo try ug connect/run then it wont bother again. it should have something like Outpost nga mo auto analyze if the packet and/or is safe or not. maybe i just havent explored and i could be wrong. with that, the usability of outpost shows.

free kerio is not supported anymore and needs registration.

mura bias jud ko ko outpost pero i think it also depends sa user needs so other tools might work for other people.

    anyway, thanks a lot juantamad.

by the way, i had this idea of blocking smtp because of worms like netsky that keeps on spamming.
