If this is an Intranet then directly setup to NTFS permission. and also MS WORD comes a feature where it needs a password to open and a password to modify. If you can't settle via NTFS permission then settle it by providing password (modifying).

Why not setup NTFS permission on that doc files? or if you can't settle thru NTFS permission then provide a password to modify...not the open password.

my bad...when it opens the document in the ms word..it automatically sets it to read only mode..

hey bro,

this is the technique:

1. In PHP create a script that will upload your *.doc file then automatically convert to XML
then save as to *.HTML (kahit may images pa, kasama yan sa convertion)

2. Open the converted file in your browser.

Research on MS Word Com Object. I have the running script for this case.
