Niņos knock on finals door
By Emmanuel B. Villaruel
Thursday, September 4, 2008
It was a completely different Lipa Barakos who showed up last night at the Cebu Coliseum. But the big-hearted Cebu Niņos did not let the Batangeņos embarrass them right at their home turf.
After over 30 minutes of nip-and-tuck battle, the Niņos all of a sudden detonated an earth-shaking 16-0 bomb at the final 5:37 mark of the contest to reduce the Barakos into smithereens, 83-72, and take a commanding 2-0 lead in their best-of-five semifinal series in the 2008 Smart-Liga Pilipinas National Playoffs.
The Niņos of sports patron Michel J. Lhuillier and coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba now seek a three-game sweep, but they are expected to face rough sailing as Game 3 swings to Batangas on December 7. Game 4, if necessary, will be played the following day still at the Barakos’ fort.
The two protagonists figured in a super close encounter for most of the way resulting into league records of 16 deadlocks and lead changes. The biggest lead of seven points, 57-56, late in the third period was owned by the Niņos courtesy of back-to-back triples by Jayford Rodriguez, but the Barakos responded with a searing 13-0 run to also register their largest lead, 63-57, with still 8:13 left to play.
The Barakos maintained a five-point advantage, 72-67, with 3:55 to go, but disaster struck them like lightning as they were held scoreless by the Niņos in the remaining four minutes of the contest.
Power-playing center Marlon Basco scored on a tip-in and then completed a three-point play for the game’s 16th and final standoff. Seconds later, Mark Ababon converted a fastbreak layup off a steal by Woodrow Enriquez and followed it up with a bone-cracking triple to push the Niņos on top by five, 77-72, with 1:42 remaining.
As the Barakos stayed on the freezer - mainly because they misfired their targets from the 3-point range due to Cebu’s crippling zone defense - Basco knocked in another shot and then Richard Ian Saladaga sank two consecutive unmolested layups to plunge the final nail on Barakos’ coffin with 34 ticks left before the final buzzer.
For the second straight game, Basco was picked as Player of the Game with 12 points, 16 rebounds, two steals and a block. It was, however, the graceful Jayford Rodriguez who topped Cebu’s scoring chart with 15 markers. Two other Niņos dished out twin figures in Stephen Padilla with 11 and Bruce Dacia with 10.
Surprisingly, the Barakos outclassed the Niņos in almost all departments. But Cebu outfoxed the visitors by a mile in rebouding, 56-29, that spelled the big difference.
Jeff Sanders paced Batangas with 17 points followed by Braulio Lim with 12. Bonbon Costudio and Al Vergara each scored 11. The missing link for the Barakos was Rommel David, who got zilch.
The Barakos fought far better than their humiliating 80-99 setback in the series opener, but the Niņos showed they’re always prepared to weather storm that will smack their way gleaned on their vast experience that yielded them countless trophies in both regional and national leagues.
The scores

Taguig thumps MisOr
TAGUIG CITY – Host Taguig Batang Global City broke out of a close game in the final period yesterday to hammer out a 92-77 win over MisOr Meteors for a 1-0 lead in their Smart-Liga Pilipinas semifinals showdown at the Tinga Gym here.
Jonathan Aldave, Ronnie Matias and Boyet Bautista conspired for the whirlwind Taguig offensive in the final period with Aldave stringing up seven straight points to give Batang Global a 90-72 lead, with four minutes remaining.
The Batang Global went on a cruise mode from there to claim the win. They go for win No. 2 in the best-of-five series at 5 p.m. tomorrow, also at the Tinga Gym.
Meanwhile, the Lipa/Batangas Barakos vow not just to roll over and die in Game 3 of their Smart-Liga Pilipinas semifinal showdown with the top-seeded Cebu Niņos.
Definitely, not in front of an adoring crowd at the Lipa Cultural Center here.
"It’s a given, Cebu is a very, very strong team," admitted Barakos coach Roger Sia. "But what we have is an abundance of heart. We’ll give them a good fight."
Down 0-2 in the best-of-five series after losing back-to-back at the New Cebu Coliseum, Lipa/Batangas is expected to play with a lot of urgency as it tries to stave off outright elimination and prevent the Ninos from clinching the first ever finals berth in the young history of the regional tournament.
Sia said the comfort of playing at home should give his team that much needed lift.
"We don’t want to dwell anymore on those two losses (on the road). Such is the advantage of playing at home," he added. "Now that we’re about to play on our homecourt, we’ll be ready for them."
The Barakos lost Game 1 Tuesday, 99-80, but had the M. Lhuillier-backed Ninos teetering on the brink of defeat in Game 2, only to go scoreless in the final four minutes of play that allowed Cebu to unleash a 6-0 run for a come-from-behind 83-72 victory.
Marlon Basco came up big for the Ninos in the twin wins, finishing in double figures in each of the game to average 14.5 points and 15 rebounds in the series.

Misamis gets back at Taguig
TAGUIG – Patrick Cabahug returned with a vengeance Saturday to lead the Misamis Oriental Meteors to a 76-68 upset of the Taguig Batang Global that leveled at one game apiece their Smart-Liga Pilipinas best-of-five semifinal series at the C.P. Tinga gym here.
The playoffs now move to the Meteors’ homecourt at Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro for Games 3 and 4, with Misamis Oriental looking to clinch a finals berth in front of its followers.
A fifth and deciding game will be played at the C.P. Tinga gym, if necessary.
Cabahug, nephew of PBA great Elmer Cabahug, exploded for 25 points, including 7 of 8 from the free throw line, as the Meteors broke away from a tight first quarter by outscoring the Batang Global, 21-13.
The first half saw four deadlocks and six lead changes.
Taguig took the series opener, 92-77, but failed to produce the same intensity in Game 2, surrendering homecourt advantage to the revved-up Meteors, who were clearly inspired by the return of Cabahug.
Indisposed last Friday, Cabahug shot 8 of 18 from inside the three-point arc, had two rebounds, four assists and three steals. Ruel Hugnatan grabbed nine rebounds for Misamis Oriental, which picked up 18 points from 19 Taguig turnovers.
Four Taguig players were in double figures, but Ronnie Matias, who had 22 points in the opener, was held down to 13, while point guard Lou Gatumbato just had five points after scoring 17 in the first game.
Nino Marquez and Boyet Bautista each had 14 points for the Batang Global.
