    Default PBA 2008-2009 season

    LATEST news and updates

Rain or Shine hopes to take PBA by storm
    Manila Bulletin
    August 28, 2008

A new name, a new game and a better direction for the PBA franchise of the Asian Coatings Philippines this time around.

To welcome the arrival of another blue-chip player into its fold who it hopes will help turn its fortunes around, Asian Coatings will carry one of its flagship brands -- Rain or Shine -- when it resumes its bid for a first-ever championship in the coming PBA Philippine Cup.

Known before as the Welcoat Paints Dragons, the Asian Coating franchise will now be called Rain or Shine Elastopainters.

Team owners Raymond Yu and Terry Que are both optimistic of the positive impact the team's new name will have in the pro league, saying the product it is carrying right now is a catch phrase among Filipinos.

"It's easy to recall, so I hope we can attract more following since the PBA has been a reliable marketing vehicle for our flagship brands," said Yu. "But we promised to be more competitive this time around."

With the new name, coach Caloy Garcia hopes to use their No. 1 pick in the annual drafting on Sunday as part of their retooling process as the management is determined to paint a bright image to its company.

"New name means more wins for our team," said Que. "By owning the top pick, we are certain to do better in the coming conference."

With the possibility of getting either former PBL hotshot Gabe Norwood or Jared Dillinger, team manager and representative to the Board Mamerto Mondragon expects the team to be more exciting and vibrant for the coming season.

"Either of the two is a good choice, since both players can play small or big," said Yu. "We really need a guard who is capable of providing stability and firepower to the team."

Que is also hoping to tab former Harbour Centre stars Sol Mercado and TY Tang.

"If they are still available in the second round, we will get them," said Que.

Alternate PBA Governor Carlo Quevada further explained that the strategic corporate move is a fitting tribute to all the national business partners and die-hard supporters of the Rain or Shine Elastomeric Waterproofing Paints.

Last year, Rain or Shine selected Joe Devance as its No. 1 pick and also tabbed Ryan Araņa in the second round.

Yu and Que also plan to use the free agent market to beef up their team.

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) and Solar Sports Entertainment Corp. is set to formalize their partnership when they start a two-day meeting Tuesday in Macau.

The signing will be part of the PBA’s annual planning session set to chart the course of the league’s coming 2008-09 season. This will be the third straight year the PBA Board will meet in the Chinese territory.

PBA board members, led by outgoing chairman Tony Chua of Red Bull and his successor Joaqui Trillo of Alaska, left early Tuesday morning for the former Portuguese colony accompanied by commissioner Sonny Barrios.

Highlight of the session is the formal signing of the three-year television deal between the league and new broadcast partner Solar Sports Entertainment Corporation.

Terms of the contract were not available although the pact is reportedly worth P498 million spread over three years.

Solar Sports, which also airs Philippine Basketball League (PBL) games through its cable channel Basketball TV (BTV), replaces ABC-5 as the league’s broadcast partner.

The country’s no. 1 sports channel already started covering the PBA’s off-season activities including the two-day Rookie Camp, which showcased the skills and talent of amateur applicants wishing to be included in the final list of the annual PBA Draft set this Sunday at the Market! Market! Activity Center in Taguig City.

Other PBA board members expected to join the meeting in Macau are Ely Capacio of San Miguel, Robert Non of Barangay Ginebra, Ricky Vargas of Talk `N Text, Purefoods’ Rene Pardo, Lito Alvarez of Air21, Sta. Lucia Realty’s Buddy Encarnado, Welcoat’s Mamerto Mondragon and JB Baylon of Coca-Cola.

Representing Solar Sports, on the other hand, will be Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and chairman Wilson Tieng and Chief Operating Officer (COO) Peter Chan Leong

Aside from the contract signing between Solar Sports and the PBA, the Board will also elect a new vice-chairman and treasurer during its stay here.

Trillo, elected PBA vice chairman last year, automatically assumes the position as board chairman making it the first time the former television personality will lead the league. – GMANews.TV

No takers so far for Phone Pals Carey, Washington
By Noli Cortez, Malaya Online Edition
    August 29, 2008

MACAU -- Unless some teams take a nibble at a pair of baits Talk N Text has dangled, the Phone Pals will be forced to make hard decisions before the next PBA season starts in October.

With the PBA Board members heading back home Thursday after finishing their directional meeting here Wednesday, the Phone Pals still have to find any takers for forwards Jay Washington and Harvey Carey who are on the trading block.

The Phone Pals are hard-pressed to unload at least one of the five Fil-Ams in their roster before they can tab US-born Jared Dillinger in the PBA Rookie Draft on Sunday at the Market! Market! in Taguig.

Dillinger, a South Dakota-born guard out of the University of Hawaii, is expected to be made the No. 2 pick overall by the Phone Pals after Welcoat, picking first, tabs Gabe Norwood -- if the latter is eligible.

Under league rules, a team is allowed to line up only five Fil-foreign players in the coming season that starts Oct. 4. A team that has more than five Fil-foreigners will be forced to unload the surplus.

With no team having expressed interest in either Washington or Carey, the Phone Pals face the possibility of not getting anything in return since any player who is not on the active list automatically becomes an unrestricted free agent.

Aside from Washington and Carey, the other Fil-foreign players in the TNT roster are Jimmy Alapag, Ali Peek and Kalani Ferreria.

Ricky Vargas, TNT's representative to the board, has left for a pre-scheduled business meeting in Hong Kong and could not be reached for comment on his team's options.

Ferreria's contract runs until February, while the contracts of Alapag, Carey and Peek expired last July 31. Washington's contract ended last Aug. 15.

While Alapag and Peek are sure to be resigned, it's not clear what the team's options are on Carey and the 6-foot-7 Washington.

The loss of either Carey, a 6-foot-4, hard-nosed banger, and the 6-foot-7 Washington, who is a threat both inside and outside, could take a toll on a TNT team aching to bounce back from a seventh place finish in the last Fiesta Conference.

Ginebra, meanwhile, is expected to get off to another slow start, with the team's backcourt duo of Mark Caguioa and Jayjay Helterbrand expected to be out for at least a month to heal various injuries.

Caguioa has tendonitis on both knees while Helterbrand is also undergoing full treatment for his pulled left hamstring suffered early in the Fiesta Finals against Air21, which Ginebra won through the brilliance of import Chris Alexander, Ronald Tubid and Eric Menk in the deciding seventh game.

The Kings went on a 0-5 start in the Fiesta Conference but finished hot.

    Castillo hangs jersey
    By Rey Joble

THERE will be no more golden finish for the man known as The Golden Boy.

Noy Castillo, one of Purefoods’ most trusted veterans, has decided to call it quits after 10 years of playing in the Philippine Basketball Association.

Castillo’s decision to retire was confirmed by Purefoods board governor Rene Pardo in a text message to Standard Today.

The 6-0 guard was taken in by Purefoods after playing one season for the Shell Turbochargers.

The sweet-shooting Castillo quickly provided the team’s weakness on the perimeter game as he blended well with some of the team’s mainstays that included Alvin Patrimonio, Jerry Codiņera and Rey Evangelista.

He was a member of the Purefoods champion team of 2005-2006 Philippine Cup and part of the RP team that competed in the Busan Asian Games handled by Jong Uichico.

Castillo’s decision to hang his jersey came barely a month after another veteran—Evangelista—also called it quits.

“They (Castillo and Evangelista) have been a major part of the team and helped the squad to become what it is now. They are good professionals and never gave us problems in their long years of service,” said Pardo.

Former Purefoods coach Eric Altamirano also had memorable moments handling both players.

“Noy is one of my best clutch shooters while Rey was instrumental in helping me win my first championship,” said Altamirano.

Evangelista is reportedly being considered to become a member of the team’s coaching staff where he is expected to share his knowledge on the defensive end.
