depende na sa motherboard kung unsa ang gisupport nya mga memory clocks. but yes mas maau if same speed na ram imo gamiton.

to give you a straight answer, since you're planning on upgrading 512MB, either you need to install 2 x 256 MB both running PC266 or just 1 x 512 MB memory stick.

also, check your motherboard manual for maximum amount of memory and frequency supported. if your mobo has dual channel support, go with 2 x 256 MB para dual channel if it doesn't, go for 512 MB para kung ganahan ka mag upgrade to 1 GB, you can just add another 512 MB -- basin ma dual channel pa sad.

    bro poldopunk is right..

and the thing about different speed memory stick are these:

Memory Speed.. mura ni ug DTI.. lowest speed prevail.. simply put..in a non overclock setting ur 266 cant ran at 400MHz but ur 400MHz when paired with a 266MHz will ran at 266MHz.

CAS Level... since every ram at certain speed has a cas level.. say ddr266 CAS Level 3.5 then paired with a 512mb ddr400 CAS Level 3.5.. since as mention earlier.. the 400MHz running at 266MHz will change its CAS Level into a higher level..from 3.5 into 2+..

then it will difinitely affect ur DDR400 RAM..since dili cya same ug CAS Level as ur DDR266..
more often..mu-init pag au ur ddr400 and then went dead because of the very tight CAS setting.

    and

IF ONBOARD ur VIDEO.. most of the time..mu error ang display..

these are based on my experience..

using PQI DDR266MHz 256MB and PQI DDR400 512MB double sideds on an intel 865GV mobo

checked the CAS Level with CPU-Z
checked the Performance Level with ScienceMark

    in a M$ XP SP2
