    Usually sound and agp video cards are automatically detected and installed.

    Modems, what kind of modem? If it's an internal modem, you have to compile a modem driver available in linuxtant.com. If it's an external one, it's ready to use.

    hmmm.... so that's why my modem is not detected because it's internal(56k by da way )thanks for the tip bro.

    and also i can't play movies. it says that "there are no codecs available to stream the file..." were do i get these codecs. is it like DivX, XdiV or sumthing in windows?

    You have to enable the universe repositories in ubuntu. Fire up synaptic, Goto settings -> repositories and check the ubuntu universe.

    Then use totem -> mplayer. This will remove totem-xine, but thats ok. This is one of the things that is lacking in ubuntu... no available codecs out of the box.

    Do i need to connect to the internet to install/add extra repositories? i've tried checking this:
