Dili ta mgpataka pre oi...GSIS president and general manager Winston Garcia said they sold their 27 percent stake in the country's biggest power retailer since "the price was right."

San Miguel's entry into Meralco marked the government's retreat from its more than three-decade hold of a power distributor that had a checkered past.

    now the history:

Meralco was folded under government's control in the 1970's, when former President Ferdinand Marcos decided to assign all power and electricity-related rights to a government monopoly, the National Power Corporation.

In the eighties, when Marcos was booted out from power, the Lopezes regained control of Meralco. But the government, through state-owned financial institutions, including GSIS, continued to keep a stake that represents the public money invested to grow the business in the 70's and early 80's.

The government's stake in Meralco has long been in the list of government assets to be privatized. The proceeds were to help beef up the government's coffers.

After a contentious stockholders meeting and election of board representatives in May 27 this year, GSIS further increased its stake to 27 percent.

That's what both Pangilinan and San Miguel eyed.

Since the announcement that San Miguel bagged the deal for GSIS's 27 percent stake in Meralco, it has increased the ante. An entity widely considered allied to San Miguel's key officials bought the remaining government's 10 percent held by state-owned pension fund Social Security System (SSS), and financial institutions Land bank of the Philippines and Development Bank of the Philippines.

The buying entity, named in news reports last week, is called Global 5000 Investment Corp.

According to Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) records, Global 5000 was incorporated last January 23, 2008 as a financial holding company.

Its phone number listed in the SEC documents is the trunkline of San Miguel.

Global 5000's incorporators and officers are also closely linked to San Miguel. The SEC records show the names of key individuals, like Roberto V. Ongpin, Inigo Zobel, and Joselito Campos...

Dili tanang kwarta nga gihulog sa Meralco is owned by the Lopezes. Meralco is an open corporation. It just so happens that the Lopezes own majority of the shares. and even if they own majority, all stakeholders have the right to make collective decisions too.

lagi the price was right kay wla namay dali nga pwede ma liquidate nila kay unsaon nalang ang monthly pension sa pagkakaron kay ang ilang g invest sa world market ni ugdaw man that's behind the reason man ba dli lang na cya mo angkon. para pud ma divert ang attention sa mga tawo about sa kwarta sa GSIS unsaon nalang akong lola, tiyu ug tiya nga retired titser. try pud chek kong unsay nahitabo sa ilang g invest sa world market.

dli bitaw tanang kwarta sa meralco sa lopez but they own the money nga ilang g invest sa meralco compare ni winston nga dli iyaha igo sa cya nag dumala pero the way cya ni arte pag stockholders meeting as if pareho pud cya sa mga lopez nga RICH! that's the point there. nya diay to scripted ra nya wla nagsilbi.

GSIS books are open to scrutiny by COA and other watchdog agencies...

Again, the government's stake in Meralco has long been in the list of government assets to be privatized. The proceeds were to help beef up the government's coffers. Ayaw lng cguro butangi ug malisya. Di ta mgpataka ug hakop sa hangin nga gibaligya ang shares tungod ky naglisod ang GSIS.

Sumala gud, like sa Petron, the gov't had a stake in it. But because of privatization endeavors, they sold the shares too. ayaw sab ko ingna nga gibaligya sa gobyerno ang Petron shares ky naglisod ang PNOC?

    Same story w/ PNB.

The national government's privatization program is a positive move since the revenue from the move can be used for the development programs. Instead of resorting to borrowings from the international monetary fund which could add to government's woes of loans, the privatized companies will bring a twofold benefit to the country – that of getting revenue and the continuous operations of services.

kanang gisulti nimo pag arte ni Winston did2 sa stockholders miting dili intawn pasabot nga ngpa aron ingon cya nga datu pud pareha sa mga Lopezes...Even though perceived by many as arrogant, he has a right to complain coz he represents (as the president) a big stake of GSIS in meralco.

unsa may labot kno beh kng Lopez own the money he invested in meralco while Winston doesn't? U mean ang kinanglan ra gyud mo complain as a shareholder or shareholder representative should be AS RICH AS LOPEZ also? It doesn't make any sense at all.

Open corporations like Meralco doesn't work that way... anybody can be a shareholder in Meralco whether the entity is a private person, or a juridical entity. But since GSIS is a juridical entity, it has to be represented by somebody.

Let's put it this way. Let's imagine for awhile that it is not Winston, say, somebody you like. What would u have done if u were in his shoes?
