Books rejected by the Catholic Religion:
1. First and Second Esdras
2. Prayer of Manasses
3. Susanna*
*A reader says: "Susanna is in the Roman Catholic canon. It is Daniel 13."
Why the books were not included:The word "apocryphal" (ἀπόκρυφος) was first applied, in a positive sense, to writings which were kept secret because they were the vehicles of esoteric knowledge considered too profound or too sacred to be disclosed to anyone other than the initiated. It is used in this sense to describe A Holy and Secret Book of Moses, called Eighth, or Holy (Μωυσέως ἱερὰ βίβλος ἀπόκρυφος ἐπικαλούμενη ὀγδόη ἢ ἁγία), a text taken from a Leiden papyrus of the third or fourth century AD, but which may be as old as the first century. In a similar vein, the disciples of the Gnostic Prodicus boasted that they possessed the secret (ἀπόκρυφα) books of Zoroaster. The term in general enjoyed high consideration among the Gnostics (see Acts of Thomas, 10, 27, 44)[1].
The Unfair Assumption:
In order for this argument to hold water, a basic assumption is made. That is that all books mentioned in the Bible should be part of the Bible. Massimo Franceschini, an Italian convert to Mormonism, has suggested that the biblical text is more than sixty-five percent incomplete, due, in part, to the “lost books” cited within the Bible itself (Franceschini, 2002).
Some additional writings, referenced in the Old Testament
and New Testament, can be added to the list:
Book of the Covenant mentioned in Exodus 24:7; et al.The Chronicles of the Kings of Media and Persia mentioned in Esther 10:2Book by Samuel mentioned in 1 Samuel 10:25Laments for Josiah mentioned in 2 Chronicles 35:25Chronicles of King David mentioned in 1 Chronicles 27:24Paul’s letter to the Laodiceans mentioned in Colossians 4:16Paul’s previous Corinthian letter mentioned in1 Corinthians 5:9
